FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND ... A New Version

Imagine you and the Lord Jesus are walking by the sea together. For much of the way, the Lord's footprints go along steadily, consistently, rarely varying the pace.

But your footprints are a disorganised stream of zigzags, starts, stops, turnarounds, circles, departures, and returns.

For much of the way, it seems to go like this, but gradually your footprints come more in line with the Lord's, soon paralleling, His consistently.

You and Jesus are walking as true friends!

This seems perfect, but then an interesting thing happens: Your footprints that once etched the sand next to Jesus' are now walking precisely in His steps.

Inside His larger footprints are your smaller ones, you and Jesus are becoming one.

This goes on for many miles, but gradually you notice another change. The footprints inside the large footprints seem to grow larger.

Eventually they disappear altogether. There is only one set of footprints.

They have become one.

This goes on for a long time, but suddenly the second set of footprints is back. This time it seems even worse! Zigzags all over the place. Stops. Starts. Gashes in the sand. A variable mess of prints.

You are amazed and shocked.

Your dream ends. Now you pray:

"Lord, I understand the first scene, with zigzags and fits. I was a new Christian; I was just learning. But You walked on through the storm and helped me learn to walk with You."

"That is correct."

"And when the smaller footprints were inside of Yours, I was actually learning to walk in Your steps, following You very closely."

"Very good.. You have understood everything so far."

When the smaller footprints grew and filled in Yours, I suppose that I was becoming like You in every way."

"Precisely."

"So, Lord, was there a regression or something? The footprints separated, and this time it was worse than at first."

There is a pause as the Lord answers, with a smile in His voice.

"You didn't know? It was then that we danced!"

  1. Wonderful Vixtor! I really liked this interpretation!! Thank you.

Of course, some of my zig xags are self will running amock, but maybe He still keeps a hand on me, holding mine. I hope so ,anyway.

  3. Sorry Victor, I keep pressing the x, instead of the c key. I am using my son's laptop, and some of the keys are missing and the keyboard is larger!!! Touch typing gone haywire ha-ha!

    My laptop is kaputt,moribund, unfortunately.

  4. Thank you for this version of Footprints (maybe you should call it Danceprints :)I have always loved the analogy of our journey with Christ as one of a dance- now I just have to remember to let Him lead.
    Loved the song as well!
    God Bless.

  5. Hi Shadowlands,

It doesn't matter which keys you press as long as you continue visiting and commenting here. Thanx.

    Hello Karinann,

I'm so glad that you enjoyed this version of Footprints. It was sent to me by a friend. I like this version of Lord of the dance by the Dubliners.

God bless you Shadowlands and Karinann.

  6. What a wonderful version of a beautiful poem. I really enjoyed it. I actually didn't see the dance part coming, which made it all the more special.

But I especially liked the way earlier part of the story. It really does reflect the path many of us have taken (with hopes for the same result!!)

May we all dance with Christ someday!

    God Bless

  10. Wonderful! In re-reading some of my journals from the past few years, I find that my spiritual life regresses quite a bit and I seem to be going in circles instead of moving ahead. The Lord and I must be dancing! What a great explanation!

  14. Hi Victor, I'm writing a book and your poem came to me some years ago as a sign from God so I was hoping you will allow me to include it in a story in my book. When did you pen it?

  16. How beautiful this version is.
As a child I used to stand on my dad's feet as he danced me around the house.
I have a feeling that God may have been dancing with us, too.
Thank you so much for this version Victor.
I must close for now, I can hardly see through my tears.

    God's Blessings Victor 👣
