I see my good friend, Bernie, is a reader of your blog. I look forward to reading more about our Faith. I am a convert, and there are so many things that I still do not understand, even after 25 years. But what struck me first was the reverence of the Mass, the solemnity and adoration. AND, I would not mind the Mass in Latin - in fact, I believe I would enjoy it very much.

Peace, Love & Joy,
AbbeyAbbey's Roadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04031127190630487584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100862372880209397.post-65794640095383682442010-05-10T16:02:14.739-07:002010-05-10T16:02:14.739-07:00Hello Sarah,

As Gabriella says, the small man and woman is totally confused as to why we have so many traditions and doctrines - like burning incense, holy water, different oils and so on.

Hi Sarah,

I'd never thought seriously about Father Ignatius' accent when I wrote the book Visions. I certainly did not imagine him as upper class with a posh accent like Nigel Havers in this advert.

Advert HERE.

I suppose Fr Ignatius sounds a bit more like Geoffrey Palmer.

Video HERE.

And also HERE.

I hope this helps distinguish an upper class type English accent from a more "normal" one; if there is such a thing.

Britain is truly a land of many accents. Father Ignatius, I assure you, does not have a pronounced London cockney, Birmingham, Newcastle, Yorkshire or other readily distinguishible regional English accent.

God bless you Michael, Sarah and Gabriella for writing in.Victor S E Moubarakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04280638667651857296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100862372880209397.post-56655411484726671342010-05-10T04:16:52.324-07:002010-05-10T04:16:52.324-07:00How right you are, Victor, those in authority have...How right you are, Victor, those in authority have left the small man and woman totally confused on what the Church's doctrines and traditions are; and the reasons behind these traditions and doctrines ...

I've noticed that recently EWTN is actually doing a great job in explaining our traditions and their origins (I'm amazed I can watch EWTN here in Italy!)Gabriellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07063728426506582563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100862372880209397.post-66592552513361818592010-05-09T20:12:43.487-07:002010-05-09T20:12:43.487-07:00Hilarious video, Victor! I also enjoyed the army officer's personality.

I found it interesting that, living in England yourself, you referred to his "impeccable English accent." It makes me wish I could actually hear the two talking and compare their accents.

As an American, I'm not sure I could identify the "perfect American accent." Our Church normally performs baptisms on Sundays during Mass - just after the Gospel reading and sermon. I wonder how many people know or understand why the child being baptised is annointed with various oils; and the meanings of these oils!

God bless.Victor S E Moubarakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04280638667651857296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100862372880209397.post-51272684147000408332010-05-09T07:06:27.967-07:002010-05-09T07:06:27.967-07:00Another very good post Victor. Obviously, a bit of a caricature, but you have captured the army officer 'off to a tee' You make a good point in a very amusing way; being a convert myself I can remember how strange some Catholic practices appeared to me at first.

I agree we need to use any opportunity that presents itself to explain these things not only to non-Catholics but also to those Catholics who may not have been taught about things in the same way that they were perhaps a generation ago.Idle Ramblerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07583960388335420573noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100862372880209397.post-19430701048285502352010-05-09T05:32:13.826-07:002010-05-09T05:32:13.826-07:00Hi Bernie,

We have let so many things lapse in our church or perhaps it is because there are not enough people ...... Lighting candles in front of statues is an example that comes to mind. I have already dealt with matter in another of my Father Ignatius stories.

It is understandable of course that people from other denominations don't understand the "Catholic ways" of doing things.

However, I believe the problem arises when Catholic themselves don't understand either. Many go to church and follow Catholic traditions without thinking; almost a reflex reaction one might say. They do what they've always done out of habit rather than out of understanding.

The teachings of the Catholic Faith is greatly lacking these days; I'm afraid.

God bless you Tracy and Cristion. I really appreciate your visits here and your comments.Victor S E Moubarakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04280638667651857296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100862372880209397.post-61611462985659478882010-05-08T12:35:25.250-07:002010-05-08T12:35:25.250-07:00I enjoyed this post as well, Tracy.
