Time was ...

Times aren't as they used to be. The Times They Are a-Changin'

Someone asked the other day, “What was your favourite 'fast food' when you were growing up?”

I remember in them days we had no fast food. It was all slow cooked.

I ate at a place called 'home'. Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and we said prayers before eating. If I didn't like what Mom put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it. There was none of this pre-prepared fast food that comes in packets and the only way to get a square meal is to eat the packet and throw the food away.

In those day, you had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things that come to mind about them far off says.

Men would stand up when a lady entered the room. They would help her to her seat at the table.

People were perhaps poorer but they were happier it seems. Some people NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans, set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country or had a credit card.

People made do as best they could. I remember our toilet door had no lock. I used to sit with my leg stretched out towards the door and sing loudly. I forgot the door opened outwards.

My parents never drove me to school... I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed (slow).

We didn't have a television in our house until I was 10. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 10 PM, after playing the national anthem and a Christian epilogue.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home; but milk was, and some groceries and bread. Different vans delivered different goods.

Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the films. Celebrity singers did not need to dress provocatively or not at all whilst performing their songs.

Somehow, people respected each other more, and respected each others' opinions, or right to an opinion, even though they might not agree. Today, the style seems to be, "if you don't agree with me I should shut you up!"

Sad isn't it?
