Choice? If only ...

A discussion the other day: What if you could eliminate one characteristic out of human nature, which one would it be?

Someone suggested anger. Someone else said envy … jealousy, hatred, prejudice, fear … and so on.

What if this were possible; what would you get as a result?

A robot. Someone pre-programmed by you with whatever emotions you feel should stay in and which ones taken out.

But God decided differently.

He gave us all these emotions, both positive and negative ones, and with them He gave us a responsibility.

The responsibility to keep them under control and to use them properly.

Even some negative emotions have a purpose if controlled properly and used in the right circumstances. If we didn’t have anger we would not be so disposed to stand up against evil. Fear keeps us from being foolhardy and reckless at times.

So there you have it: negative and positive emotions and a responsibility to control them.

Phew … I’m suddenly tired with all these responsibilities!

  1. I agree with what you have said here Victor. When I started to read your post about what should we eliminate out of our human nature the word 'judgement' came into my mind. I think what you have written has more or less said the same thing. God bless.

  3. It's such quandry. We want the world to be perfect, but if we rid ourselves of all that we see as evil, indeed, as you say, what would be left. So, we go on hoping we are doing our best, hoping we stand for good. I'll be on retreat this weekend and will ponder these words. Thank you and have a grand weekend!

  4. Too many people today refuse to take responsibility for their actions, and that's such a sad commentary, Victor. Unfortunately, that's demonstrated large scale with our current president.
    Blessings!

  6. Unfortunately, people don't care enough about others so unless that changes, we will still be on the wrong road, accomplishing nothing but more anguish.

    1. Yes, I have found that too - selfishness and self-centred people.

  7. thecontemplativecat here. I am afraid for America's future. It is an effort to sanitize our country and our thinking.

  8. I, too, am fearful for the future of America; our world, actually. Must stop judging others and remember that wise observation -- "When you point a finger, don't forget there are 3 fingers pointing back at you."

I'm sorry to hear you're having a difficult time, my friend. Try, as best you can, to truly trust God that He will see you through this. He never fails us.

      God bless you and yours.

  10. Dearest Victor,
Yes, we ought to live with all of our emotions—including those of pain as that is what Jesus Christ showed the world how to handle.
Life is not always easy but with prayers we will manage!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  11. Excellent point, the ball, so to speak, is in our court, but the Heavenly Coach will always be there to help if we ask.

  12. Thecontemplativecat here. Google and Blogspot messing with me, again. Scraping and scrapping all those emotions would lead to a non-person/robot as you said.

  13. That's an intriguing question and got me thinking. The first thing in my mind was greed because all these major problems going on in the world seem to root from greedy people. Greed for power and money. But then again, maybe it's fear. Their fear of not having enough or fear that no one will notice them that drives them to be greedy.

    1. Yes you are right. Greed. This is what made Adam and Eve disobey God in the first place. They had Paradise, they wanted more.
