Tomorrow marks the beginning of Lent - traditionally people give up something for Lent. It could be chocolates, drinks, entertainment or something similar.
For Lent I am giving up caring.
What's the use of caring?
What is the point of shaving and trimming my beard every day? It grows back again in a few days.
What's the use of wearing clean close every day? They get dirty again soon enough.
What's the use of vacuum cleaning every day? The house gets dirty again in a few minutes. Now the vacuum cleaner stands in the corner gathering dust by itself.
What is the point of watching the News on TV and getting upset at what's happening in the world? I can't control anything anyway.
So I decided to stop caring altogether about everything.
Other things I will not care about are whisky, chocolates and cookies and cakes and other goodies I like.
I'll give the money I saved to The Salvation Army, because I care about them and the work they do.
The Salvation Army has always held a special place in my heart, too. What a great idea to set aside the money we would have spent on frivolities and give to a deserving charity. Great Lenten message, Victor. Blessings!

ReplyDeleteI think there comes a time in life when we realise what is really important and what is not. Years ago, when a member of an important organisation a matter of different opinions divided the organisation almost to destruction. Everyone took sides and were in entrenched positions. Looking back now ... was it that important? Probably not.
DeleteAs I look at the world today; there are so many disagreements and divisions. Are they really worth caring about and losing sleep over? ??? ??? Can I influence any of them one little bit? Even my dog does not listen to me these days. I say "Go to bed!" and he replies, "Who's Ted?"

Very good point, Jack; about getting hungry again and again. I often wondered why. That's why I don't bother with a lot of cooking; a quick KFC will do.

I am so thankful for the Salvation Army and all of the good that they do. Many folks have been blessed due to this very organization. In Ireland there is a custom of pancake Tuesday, where all the sugar sweet makings are cleared out of the cupboards. I loved seeing Christians from newscasters with ash crosses on their foreheads, as part of their witness to salvation through Christ. Caring is a rare commodity in this time.
