Phone Calls

Phone rings.

"Hello, is that you?"

"No."

Puts phone down. Phone rings again.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Puts phone down. Phone rings again.

"I would like to speak to the person who owns this phone."

"OK!"

"Is that you?"

"No."

Puts phone down. Phone rings again.

"Before you ask, yes I am sure it is not me who owns this phone. I am just visiting. The owner of the phone is in the shower. Can you ring her again later?"

Silence.

"Does the owner of the phone, and this address, like foreign food?"

"What? I told you, she is in the shower!"

"Could you ask her, please? Does she like foreign food? You know, French food, Italian, Greek ... any foreign foods from around the world."

"I told you, she is in the shower. You don't seriously expect me to barge in and ask her!"

"It would help!"

"Why do you want to know?"

"We can arrange monthly deliveries of packages with all the ingredients to prepare a nice meal for two of any nation or taste. Say pizza or pasta dishes with nice Italian wine, or a Greek moussaka with Retsina wine or Ouzo, or ..."

"Wait ... I shall go and ask her."

Leaves line open for a few minutes whilst reading a magazine then says, "Do you sell shampoo, or bubble bath?"

"Ehm ... no ..."

"Pity ... that's what she needs right now!"

Puts phone down.

    1. These tele-marketing calls can be a nuisance. A lot of them cannot be blocked.

      God bless, Tom.

  2. I remember running to the phone after a few rings so the person would not hang up, now if it is not a number in my contact list the phone does not even ring, I check for messages at my leisure.

    1. We have a system in the UK where you can block a caller AFTER they have phoned you. So they can't ring again. The problem is, a lot of these tele-marketing firms use a new number every time. The contact list solution might work; but it will need to be up-dated often to include my changing contacts numbers. Especially people who phone me on their cell-phones and change cell-phone contracvts often.

In the UK, people change their cell-phones, (apparatus, as well as contract and phone number), on average once a year. What a waste of money, and a nuisance for my contact list.

      God bless, JoeH.

    2. I tried that blocking but as you say they use a different number every time. I used to call back just to see if there was someone and always got a busy or an operator saying no such number. Once I got a real person and gave them hell, cussing and everything and then hung up. I thought later and am pretty sure it was just some poor sap who had his number used to make the scam call to me. Felt real bad and do not call back anymore.

    3. Now you got me worried. Can they use your/my number to make the scam call? So the authorities would think I made the call?

      God bless.

    1. I agree, Mariette. How could we get Greek food delivered, if we don't understand the language? It's all Greek to me!!! I like stuffed vine leaves; but is it youvarlakia, avgolemono, or baklava?

      God bless.

  4. This could be a one-man show!
As you've pointed out, we can block callers all day long, but they keep using different numbers. Thankfully, my provider (Verizon) has a feature where it asks the caller to identify themself and the reason for their call. In 3 years, I can only remember one such call that didn't hang up.

    1. I've seen a similar feature called "Call Guardian" at someone's house. When I phone them, a computer voice says, "This is Call Guardian. Please give your name and press #" When I do that, I can still hear the phone ringing and eventually my friend at the other end answers. I'm not sure how much they pay for this feature.

I leave the answering machine on all the time now; and only answer when I recognise the caller.

      God bless, Mevely.

  5. I see you have a phone that does not have an unlisted number. LOL Good read and also brought smiles. I don't answer the phone but do not enjoy watching my wife's troubled face when getting those stupid calls, she finds it hard to be rude, but I am sure those callers depend on that.
THANKS dude, I do think there is a small screww loose you need to tighten. LOL

    1. I did have an unlisted number. No one called me. I felt lonely and un-wanted. So I kept calling my home using my cell-phone.

The other day a tele-marketeer phoned me to ask if I needed a screwdriver. I said, "NO".

As I put the phone down I heard a metallic sound hit the ground.

      God bless, Jack and Sherry.

  6. Can't remember when we last had a land line, and fortunately, my cell block most potential spam callers. Still, I get those unwanted calls at times. What a nuisance!
    Blessings, Victor!

    1. I wondered whether to give up the land line. How do you get the Internet? Does your cell-phone link to your computer?

      God bless, Martha.

    2. Without a landline the internet comes through via the landline wiring, you give that phone number so they can connect you, but without a phone you don't get phone bills, just internet connection fees. The modem from whichever internet provider you choose gets connected to the phone line and to your computer.

  7. That is a good way to handle one of those annoying calls. I used to put the phone on the floor close to my feet jump up and down yelling, we won something over and over. They usually hang up on me! Now they just keep calling on a zillion different numbers. Most of them with my area code. How do they do that? Blessing!

    1. Yes, they keep changing their number so your phone does not recognise the incoming calls. It's all done by computers. The best remedy is to teach a parrot to say, "Who is it?" over and over again. That will certainly confuse them.

I tried teaching a monkey to do it. But he did not want to be paid in peanuts.

      God bless you, Nells.

  9. We are blessed to be able to keep the same phone number, even if we move or switch mobile phone providers. Some people keep the same number for many, many years. That way you know when that person is calling.

No, it's not me, of course, it's my third cousin's second wife.

    1. I did not know you can keep the same number when you change mobile phone providers. Thanx Mimi.

  10. Phone calls from anyone trying to sell me something are so annoying. If I get a call with a voice or number I don't recognise I just hang up.
