And the point is?

WARNING: This post is likely to make me very unpopular.

If something has no point it becomes pointless. Like a pencil for instance. If a pencil has no point it is pointless and of no use; unless you sharpen it again and it has a point.

It's the same with life. We need to have a point at what we do.

I hate it when I have to do something just because convention dictates it. Because others have done it and I have to slavishly do the same. Like when travelling for instance.

People would say to me, "You've been to Paris and not visited the Eiffel Tower? Or been to the Louvres?" Why should I? Millions of people before me have been to Paris and visited these and other places. Why should I do the same? Perhaps I prefer to visit a restaurant and have a nice French meal. I remember once sitting outdoors at a restaurant eating Al Fresco. That was the name of the owner. As I was served my French onion soup it started to rain. It took me ages to finish that soup; it kept refilling the plate.

Some tourists go to Italy and take photos of them pushing the Tower of Pisa. It doesn't mean I should do the same, does it? Or they go to the Sydney Opera House, or this or that place. It doesn't mean I should follow their example. When I get back to work and colleagues gleefully describe their holidays they are astounded to discover that I did not visit or take photos of certain places. "You went all the way there and did not take a photo of the place?" they ask. Why should I? I can buy a postcard of the place, or print one on the Internet.

I remember once going to the hairdresser and he asked me how was my holiday in Rome and the Vatican City. "Did you see the Pope?" he asked me.

Yeh ... like you can go there and ring the doorbell and ask to see the Pope.

In order to shut him up I said I saw the Pope and had a private audience with him.

"Really?" he asked, "what did he say?"

I replied, "He said, tell me who cut your hair so bad and I'll get your money back for you!"

And it doesn't stop at travelling; people also expect you to do certain things just because it is the convention to do so.

What? You haven't read any Shakespeare sonnets? You should do so.

Why? Why should I read his sonnets and his plays? He doesn't read any of my books. Besides his plays are boring. No car chases in any of them. Ben-Hur was written years before Shakespeare in the Old Testament times and it has a chariot race which Charlton Heston won. None of that in any of Shakespeare's writings. Can you imagine if he had written Baywatch, Magnum P.I. or Hawaii Five 0, they would have been pointless written in rhyming sonnets.

Music is not immune to the snobbery that is convention. I'll admit that I am ignorant when it comes to classical music. I know there are some tunes that I like but I cannot name them or tell you who composed them and why. When I need to know I just ask someone by humming the tune as best I can and more often than not they don't know either. I wish there was a computer app where you hum a tune and they tell you it is Mozart Piano Concerto played on the bagpipes because his piano was being retuned on that day.

Anyway, as I said earlier, no doubt this post will make me unpopular amongst my well-educated and well-travelled and knowledgeable audience. I just don't see the point of doing something just because everyone else seems to be doing it.

And that is why I refuse to take the trash out on Fridays because collection is the next day. Let someone else do it. The neighbours for instance. They seem to enjoy it. Why don't they take souvenir photos of them taking the trash out and leave me alone?

    1. Good point, Willie. I don't see why we should do things because other tourists have done them, or read certain books, or see certain films and so on.

I'd like to go cycling with dolphins. If humans have learnt to swim I don't see why dolphins can't learn to cycle.

      God bless.

  4. this might be my favorite of your posts. You should hear the comments when I proudly declare I have never watched the Wizard of Oz or The Sound of Music, you would think I said I murdered my mother... shocked to the core..also travelers go into a state of shock when i say I don't have a passport and have never been out of the country of my birth. USA. I don't like boats or planes or riding long distances in cars, which makes it difficult to go to another country. the 3rd and biggest shock to almost everyone I know/meet is the fact I live 90 miles from Disney World and don't go there and have no desire to.
About the paperless thing yesterday. I am 100 percent paperless but not because they ask me to. It is so easy without all that paper to decide to keep or shred and what to do with the shreds. the only thing is, now I fear someone taking down the internet and I will not know how to pay the bills or where or what i even have if they don't appear in my email

    1. It's so nice to see you visiting here MadSnapper. Please call again soon and often and invite your friends. Let's exchange views and opinions.

Me too ... I have never watched the Wizard of Oz or The Sound of Musics all the way through. Although I'll admit I cried when we went to see The Sound of Music - the cinema tickets were so expensive I melted into tears. I left the family there and went home for a beer.

I also understand your reasons for not travelling far. It's the same here. Everything is so far from the UK. Except France. They're too near!

Paperless is good, but I am concerned if something goes wrong with the computers at "their end" and the bank shows my account wrong.

God bless you. See you again soon.

  5. Was in Paris ONCE and did not visit the Tower. Still feel bad, (then & Now) ;-)

    1. That's sad, Jack. Did you at least have a souvenir of the tower? When in Pisa we got a souvenir of their tower in a box. When we got home and took it out the box it was leaning to one side. I had to stick bits of plastic on the base to make it stand straight. It was too late to send it back and ask for a refund for faulty goods.

      God bless.

  7. If a place is beautiful and i want to see it, and i can go there, i will. If it's not beautiful to me, why would i bother?

The Louvre is beautiful, and i do enjoy Shakespear's comedies. He did have a good sense of humor, even if there weren't any chariot races.

    1. My sense of humour is better than Shakespeare's. And he did not have many people reading his Blog posts, whether the humourous ones or not. They may not have had chariots in his time but he could at least have included a horse and cart race in his plays. Or someone hit in the face with a pie.

      God bless, Mimi.

  8. When someone - anyone! - begins a conversation with "You should" I mentally shut down. I can't think of specific examples at the moment, but suspect I've raised more than a few eyebrows in my time.

Because my phone has an apt that identifies what piece of music is playing, there's no need to bother educating myself in the fine arts. No guilt!

    1. Yes, you got my point Mevely. Why should we do something because others say so, or do so? Why do I need to go all the way to Australia to see the Sydney Opera House when I can get a photo from the Internet? If those who built it wanted it to be seen and visited they should have built it somewhere more convenient near me. Would anyone go to a supermarket thousands of miles away from their homes? I wouldn't.

      God bless always.

  9. Dearest Victor,
Well, I'm 100% with you and it will be impossible to re–wire my brains for becoming a copy–cat like so many 'brave' citizens have become. Either by being brainwashed through stupid TV programs or social media or whatever.
    Would not work for me/us!
Grateful for having found my own liking of foods, clothes, places to go and what to do or not to do.
Never tried to be 'popular', uhm 'blending' in with the others that follow suit.
    Will not regret it either!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  10. Your final sentence has me thinking about my neighbours, not all of them, just the immediate ones. For reasons known only to herself, one began putting her bin out on Tuesdays instead of Wednesdays. The truck comes around on Thursdays. Well soon enough, others began putting their bins out on Tuesdays too, which mean a whole extra day the postman on his bike has to dodge around all the bins to get to the mailboxes. AND, several of them now don't put away their empty bins once the truck has been and gone. They leave them on the small footpath right near the mailboxes.
I don't follow conventions either. Why go travelling around the world just because others do it? Why read Shakespeare's sonnets when I'd rather read a more exciting fiction novel? why should I cut and perm my hair just because I am over 60?

    1. I agree, River. You got it right. Over here we have separate bins with different colours - some for trash, some for re-cycling and some for garden waste like bushes, cuttings and so on. They are collected on alternate weeks. So I get out the re-cycle bin when it is NOT due for collection. The neighbours do the same. Then late at night I bring in the re-cycle bin and get out the right one to be collected. That confuses the whole street.

I see you like fiction. Why not download FREE some of my books?

    1. The thing about travel I find, it is always too far. Why do they have to put places so far? Why can't they build the Eiffel Tower, the Pisa one, the Sydney Opera house, Colosseum and all the other things in just one place so people can visit them all without too much cost?

      God bless, Brenda.

    2. I have to say that I love travel, my favourite being on a liner for four and a half weeks going to Australia. I think if you was in charge of places Victor there would only be one country on the planet, and I would have to to Mars for something different. Ha ha!

    3. What? Four and a half weeks on a ship? That would drive me mad. With lots of people sunbathing and having fun? And then Australia? Oh ... to sit down with a Foster's lager! Best thing from Australia.

      God bless.

  13. I am glad to hear that someone else besides me doesn’t do the main stream traveling. I like waterfalls and look for them in every place I visit. That doesn’t mean you have to. I simply hate very commercial places like Disney World and Universal. Take me to nature and I’m in my element. Thanks for this post. Blessings, have extraordinary new week.
