What Jesus said about ... Heaven.
"In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?" John 14:2
Jesus mentions Heaven several times in His teachings but there is only one description of the place as quoted above. He describes Heaven as a place with many rooms. This is because it
was the only imagery that the people of the time could understand. They
had seen many mansions and palaces so to describe Heaven in such terms
would engender an image and a place that they would all long for.
Certainly better than the place with acrid smell and burning flesh and
gnashing of teeth which He describes graphically on many occasions.
If you were to die today, are you sure you will go to Heaven? And what do you expect to find when you get there?
God, Jesus, The Holy Spirits and the Saints and Angels are spirits. They exist in an invisible world. We are immortal spirits too, (souls), inhabiting a temporary body which in time will decay and turn to dust. The implications here are that when we go to Heaven we will not need a physical place with many rooms and hot and cold running water and a mini-fridge with drinks and chocolates.
Some Christians also believe that at some stage our souls will re-unite with our bodies and we will live for eternity in these new bodies without blemish, illness or whatever disabilities we may have. I have often asked why will we be re-united with our bodies; and as yet got no satisfactory answer. But that aside, one would ask, if we are to have a body will we need a physical place like a mansion to live in?
Another reference to Heaven by Jesus deals with the immediacy of getting there.
"And He said to him, (the thief crucified beside Him), “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43.
He did not say you'll be with me at Judgement Day, or after spending some time in Purgatory, or at any other future date. He said: today.
Other references to Heaven deal with our attitude towards it and how to get there. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21.
"The Kingdom of Heaven is like this. A man happens to find a treasure hidden in a field. He covers it up again, and is so happy that he goes and sells everything he has, and then goes back and buys that field. Also, the Kingdom of Heaven is like this. A man is looking for fine pearls, and when he finds one that is unusually fine, he goes and sells everything he has, and buys that pearl. Also, the Kingdom of Heaven is like this. Some fishermen throw their net out in the lake and catch all kinds of fish. When the net is full, they pull it to shore and sit down to divide the fish: the good ones go into the buckets, the worthless ones are thrown away. It will be like this at the end of the age: the angels will go out and gather up the evil people from among the good and will throw them into the fiery furnace, where they will cry and gnash their teeth." Matthew 13:44 onwards.

ReplyDelete...everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.
ReplyDeleteGood point, Tom. God bless.
DeleteTom is right, but that said, this is good stuff. Thanks and looking forward to the REST of the story! LOL It is odd we still have people who want to explain what it is like in heaven when old Bro. John said, when the Lord let him see a little, said he had no words to tell. YOu did well. Love from over here I enjoyed reading this.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many different views and ideas about Heaven and what it would be like there. Will we have wings and have to fly like Angels? Do we have to learn to play the harp? I don't like the harp. Are there bagpipes in Heaven Jack? What do you think?
DeleteGod bless you and Sherry and family.
Querido amigo, no se como será el cielo pero se que Jesús nos prometió un lugar cerca de él y ese será mi cielo.
ReplyDeleteTe dejo todo mi cariño y besos, bendiciones
TRANSLATION: Dear friend, I don't know what heaven will be like but I know that Jesus promised us a place near it and that will be my heaven.
DeleteI leave you all my love and kisses, blessings.
Amen. Thank you El Sentir del Poeta. God bless you always.
I did read your book about Heaven, Victor, and it was wonderful. No, we can't exactly know what it or we will look like once we're there, but if Jesus prepares the place, it has to be wonderful! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for buying my book, Martha. I hope it helps someone turn to God. If you have time, please leave an Amazon Review.
DeleteGod bless you and yours.
It is always a comfort to me to read Jesus' response to the thief on the cross when He said, "Today you will be with me in paradise." Jesus Christ is my Savior, He has redeemed me from my sins.
ReplyDeleteAmen Barbara. Those were such comforting words to hear for the thief.
DeleteGod bless you and your family always.
How very timely, this subject! My ladies Bible study is currently doing Jennifer Rothschild's latest 'Heaven' ... I'll probably refrain from sharing my impressions until the 7 weeks' conclusion.
ReplyDeleteAs ever, your examples resonate and I appreciate your invitation to examine my own thoughts more closely.
Yes please, Mevely; do let us know when you finish the 7 weeks study what views your study group has to share. Heaven is a subject not often taught from the pulpit in sermons. And each of us at times reflect on our own thoughts about it.
DeleteGod bless you and yours.
We can only do our best and hope that God approves our entry in to his kingdom.
ReplyDeleteAmen, Bill. You are right. We should try to live as Christ would want us to.
DeleteGod bless always.
Fingers crossed. Love and kindness always. If that's not enough, so be it. ❤️
ReplyDeleteI believe it is more than just "fingers crossed".
DeleteGod bless, CM.
I know I'm going to heaven, not because of anything I've done but because of God's Grace!! No one is GOOD enough to go to heaven. I've accepted God's free gift of salvation by confessing I am a sinner, asking for forgiveness and believing Jesus died for my sins and rose again and have put my trust in Him. :)
ReplyDeleteI expect Heaven to be something wonderful beyond description. Though I would like to stay on earth a bit longer I am ready to go to heaven anytime God calls me.
Amen K. God's invitation to Heaven is open to all. We have to RSVP.
DeleteGod bless.
I tried to follow what you said above. I was wondering if you believed we go to Heaven right away or we sleep for a while until he comes back. Also, what about cremation?
ReplyDeleteGood questions, Chatty Crane.
DeletePersonally, I believe we are judged and sent to Heaven or hell the moment we die. I see no reason why God would keep us waiting until Judgement Day or when Jesus returns. If this were the case; then there are so many people in God's Waiting Room since I don't know when. I base my "theory" on two points:
The first is what i quoted above about Jesus talking to the repentant thief.
The second is in Luke 16:19-31. In this parable Jesus says that Abraham is in Heaven. Not waiting to be judged.
Anyway, that's just my thoughts.
I have nothing against cremation if people so wish to dispose of their bodies. Some donate all their organs for transplants or research. A priest told me once this is the most generous and loving act a person could make.
Thank you Chatty Crone. God bless you.
No matter what it is really like, we will be totally happy there.
ReplyDeleteAs for whether I will get there, I believe Jesus paid my way not because I'm good but because He is.
Indeed Mimi. God bless you.
DeleteIf the place I was taken to when I had my near death experience was Heaven, which I believe it was, then there is nothing that can compare to it on earth, and if I trust in our Saviour Jesus while on earth, which I do, then I have no fear of leaving this place when it is my time to go. God bless.
ReplyDeleteMany thanx Brenda. So many mysteries we do not understand; but believe in good Faith.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you and yours.
ReplyDeleteI feel secure in my Salvation and trust Jesus at His word. Im currently leading a Bible Study Fellowship group on the book of Revelation. The ladies are always wanting to know exactly what some of the symbolism means - does it matter? What matters if the eternal HOPE we have in Christ Jesus. And that He has always kept His promises to us. We may not be able to explain all of Revelations- because simply put, no one knows. We’ll find out one day meanwhile we continue to trust God and obey.
You are right Debby; what matters is our hope and trust in God and Jesus. There is so much we do not understand in the Bible; that's why we have to trust as best we can.
DeleteGod bless always.
