Father Francis Maple sings in malls,
shopping centres and bus stations to collect money to combat poverty. He has collected over the years more than £1m for charity. He has also written several books (sermons,
cooking recipes, jokes), and has contributed to many
newspaper columns and Catholic newspapers and magazines. He spends a lot
of time travelling throughout the UK leading Missions in various churches.
Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the papers,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's papers telling yesterday's news
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her world in two carrier bags.
Chorus
In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
And he wanders home alone
Chorus
And have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears.
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care
Chorus
...a noble activity.

Enjoyed the music, but only with the words you so thankfully listed. Very good and yes he has hit the nail on the head. We sometimes think we have it bad until.....
ReplyDeleteFrom this side,
Sherry & jack (This was good!)
That's true, Jack. There is always someone worse off than us; in many ways.
DeleteGod bless you and Sherry always.
So very powerful. I'm touched. Thank you Victor, for sharing.

ReplyDeleteThank you so very much, Mevely.

This song makes us realize how very fortunate we are. If we are loved, clothed, and respected, we are among the very privileged. Thank you, Victor, for this extraordinarily beautiful reminded. Have a wonderfully blest day!
ReplyDelete***argh! Reminder not reminded!!
DeleteSo true, Nells. We often forget those who have not.
DeleteGod bless always.
We are so blessed, and we need to remember and pass on the blessings.
ReplyDeleteAmen Mimi. So true.

Most of us have nothing to complain about and should be more grateful for what we do have!! We should be happy to help others whenever we can!!
ReplyDeleteMany people take what they have for granted. They see it as an entitlement rather than as a blessing from God.
DeleteGod bless, Happyone.
There are always people who need help so we should be thankful for what we have and help when we can.
ReplyDeleteYes, thank you Bill. I agree.
DeleteGod bless.
Listening as I sit here and say 'hello' ...
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you visiting here again, Linda. Thanx.

May God bless Fr. Maple for all his good works and unshakable faith, Victor.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Amen. I wish I had as much faith.
DeleteGod bless you and your family, Martha.
Hi Victor,
ReplyDeleteyes we may not know what is in the life of another who we pass in the street. I remember, when my friend and I used to go our singing in the streets and handing out our Christian leaflets, there was a man who people just called an alcoholic. When I got talking to him, he told me he could not get the memories of how he had killed someone in the Falklands war. I knew straight away that the alcohol was a fence he was hiding behind, and told him that God would forgive him because of his sorrow for what he had done. God bless.
We never know the pain and memories that people carry with them. Thank you Brenda for sharing your thoughts here.
DeleteGod bless you.
Good post Victor and I like your song choice.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
The song originally sang by Ralph McTell. Great lyrics.
