FATHER FRANCIS MAPLE
WEBSITE HERE
Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the papers,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's papers telling yesterday's news
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her world in two carrier bags.
Chorus
In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
And he wanders home alone
Chorus
And have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears.
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care
Chorus
This post is dedicated to people I know who work at the Food-Bank and do a lot of
good work feeding the poor at night in London and elsewhere.
...in many US cities, it's a crime to feed the homeless.
ReplyDeleteThis is very sad. What should the poor do in such a situation?
DeleteGod bless, Tom.
Thank you for this very touching post today, Victor. We have a lot of homeless in the USA, and it is heartbreaking to see so many in our cities and parks, etc. There's no easy answer to their plight. I can only pray for them and also for those who are able to provide food and some shelter for them. They are to be commended for their kindness.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your visit, Pamela. Over here the Government and the Authorities do their best to provide accommodations for the homeless.
DeleteThere are many voluntary associations like the St Vincent de Paul Society who go out to feed the poor. Here's a story I wrote 10 years ago:
https://timeforreflections.blogspot.com/2013/02/london-nights.html
I have known Father Francis, who sings this song, for a number of years. He has raised over £1m for the poor by singing at malls, shopping centres and bus stations, as well as concerts.
God bless, Pamela.
Such a powerful message .. heartbreaking, too. What's that old saying, "There but for the grace of God go I."
ReplyDeleteIndeed Mevely. It could happen to any of us. Right now with interest rates going up many can't afford the increase in their mortgage payments.
DeleteGod bless you and yours always.
My wife and I used to volunteer at a food bank. There are so many people who need their service in today's world. The place we were at gave out a free lunch to whoever needed it. It was good food that the stores didn't want so they delivered to the food bank. Some places just throw the food out, that is totally incredible and senseless.
ReplyDeleteYes, also here, Bill; some supermarkets pass on their unwanted products as donations to food banks. It is good food that is used for so many in need. The St Vincent Society also makes sandwiches and soups and go out in town to feed the homeless.
DeleteGod bless.
A very good tribute to all those who help at food banks and are able to donate to them too. It is so needed in these present times.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Indeed Jan. It is such a shame that we still have poverty in the world in the 21st Century.
DeleteGod bless always.
There are plenty of lonely people everywhere who need us. We have a food bank here, too, they do great work.
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad that there are so many in need in the world today.
DeleteGod bless, Mimi.
Beautiful. Thanks for the lyrics along with the Father's singing. Yes those volunteers deserve some recognition from us, the Lord has already seen and planned, but we too should appreciate the dedication.
ReplyDeleteLove you my friend, another day in court, NO results, but again a promise, next month will contain answers...
Thanks for the prayers, they are working, we are just anxious to hear the answers...
Shjerry & jack on this side.
I know people who go out to feed the poor. It is hard work buying the foodstuff, making sandwiches and soup, taking it out in cars and vans and distributing it to the people. Also I know people who work in food-banks who do similar hard work.
DeleteStill praying for you, Jack and Sherry. God bless. Be patient and trust the Lord.
This is a lovely song, the words are so true. When my friend and I used to hand out our leaflets in the street I will never forget when I met a man that everybody called an alcoholic. As I talked to him he started crying and he told me that he drank alcohol to hide the memories of when he had been in the army and killed certain people. We met him often and he gradually wanted to know more about our Saviour Jesus. God bless you for sharing this , and God bless the very kind people who work at the food bank.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the work you did and do to spread the Word of God and giving people hope, Brenda. There are so many people in need and forgotten by society.
DeleteGod bless always.
