What if ...

What I am about to say may sound a little complicated, but please have patience with me, and tell me what you think.

When we look at a globe, or a map, we are accustomed to seeing the USA, Britain and Europe in the Northern hemisphere, and Australia and New Zealand and other countries in the Southern hemisphere. We recognise the North and South poles.

But what if the world, in real life, is upside down and we do not know it?

Let me explain.

Imagine the world is a big ball hanging there in mid-air in a big expanse we call space. Imagine space as a huge large box. A massive box filled with earth, moons and other planets. All hanging in mid-air and spinning round.

The earth is spinning from left to right, giving us the impression that the sun rises from the right if we are facing North. But in effect the sun does not rise at all. It is in one stationary point and it is our spinning that makes us think it rises from the East.

East is just a word we invented. We could have called it something else. We could have called North, Norma, and South, Suzanne for all it matters.

By the way, and just as an aside, my uncle Ernest discovered the East Pole. It was somewhere on the equator but because the earth kept spinning he could not quite locate it.

Anyway, as I was saying ... imagine the big box we call space is itself upside down and all its content is upside down. The earth would look like this.

And we would not know it. We would still be living on earth like normal. It would probably spin from right to left, but because we don't know it, we would still see the sun rise from what we call East.

I know some people would say that when we send rockets into outer space the astronauts see the earth with North at the top. But for all we know, the spaceship could be travelling upside down and the people inside it don't realise it. For in outer space there is no up or down. It is one big huge box and regardless of how people are travelling in the box there is no real up or real down.

It is just space. And we and the whole earth is in it. And all the planets. All, upside down.

Which explains why some people get headaches.

  1. If space is unlimited, is there even such a thing as upside down? Now you've given me a headache.

    1. You've got it right, JoeH. In space, (the big box I speak of), there is no up or down; so there is no right way up or upside down.

If we face North we see the sun rising in the East. But if the world is upside down as in my second photo and we don't know it we still see the sun in the East. So if the big box I speak of, (space), is placed on the table upside down, and all its content is upside down, no one needs to know it and people on earth will still face what they call North and still see the sun rise from their East. It does not matter whether the big box is placed on the table the right way up, upside down, or even sideways.

The headache comes from thinking about it.

I've discussed this with Galileo and he agrees with me. He is an Italian friend who lives down the road. He says I am right so I gave him a haddock ... That's haddock the fish not haddock the pain in the head.

      God bless.

  2. This is the most scientific thing I have read all day!

(It really is. The other thing I read was about rice.)

    1. Hi Sandi,

I hope you've enjoyed my scientific piece. I too read about rice. The instructions on the quick-cook rice said, "take one sachet from packet and stand in boiling water for 5 minutes".

      I burnt my feet.

      God bless.

  6. I always thought that there was something wrong with me and now I also understand why my hair is always standing straight up...unless I put a hat own. All I can say is that I hope gravity holds on tight to my feet!
I also have a headache. Could someone please pass me the Tylenol, too.
How do you get all these thoughts to work into a great post!

    God's Blessings ✝

  7. Oh! I just thought of something else...
when I was a kid and hung upside down on the monkey bars at the playground, was I really right side up???

    1. Jan, the thing is, it does not matter whether you are upside down or the right way up. It does not affect the hair standing on ends or the feet in gravy, or gravity for that matter. The reality is that we all stand as we are: upright. However, if the whole world is upside down, and so are all the planets around us, we are not to know, because in space there is no right way up.

If a fly lands on an upright mirror, looks at its reflection and says, "Aha ... that's another way of looking at it!" Is the fly looking at the reflection or the reflection looking at the fly?

      God bless.

    1. It matters to me, because I don't want to fall out of bed if I'm upside down.

  10. Now that's what I call not travelling in the box, but thinking outside the box, Victor! Yes, and thanks for the headache. :)

    1. It's worth thinking about, Martha. After all, maps were drawn by humans and they decided to draw the USA and Europe at the top of the map and Australia and other countries down under. They could have drawn the map upside down and we would not have known any better.

      God bless you.

  11. It's all simply by convention, we could decide to turn all of the maps the other way if we wanted. Somehow i don't think most people will cooperate.
