Regrets? I wish I had not eaten that ...

Sometimes in life a song, or a photo from years gone by takes you back many years as you remember different times, different places, different people, and different chocolates even.

It is called nostalgia. Not the chocolate ... the taking your mind back to bygone times. Are you paying attention? Stop thinking of chocolates for a while.

As I was saying; nostalgia isn't what it used to be. In olden times nostalgia took you back to your childhood, to your school days, friends and so on. But as you get older, nostalgia becomes trying to remember what you had for breakfast!

Anyway, there I was in the garden with this contraption gifted to me. It is the size of a matchbox and it has on it many songs you can hear on speakers or earphones.

And a song from the past came on. It triggered memories of people I knew then. Things that happened then. Things I cannot change now. Nor make amends.

I doubt many of you are old enough to remember the song. Although it has been re-recorded several times by different artists. My readers are typically young and would only remember songs from the 60s or 70s.

Well, this song was about regrets, of which I have a few, but then again too few to mention ... ... ...

I hate plagiarism, don't you? I long for the day when there is no more plagiarism in the world. You, may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one. I hope someday you will join us. And the world will be as one ... no plagiarism any more.

The memories from the past and the regrets came flooding back as I sat down on the bench crying my heart out.

It was then I realised that someone had left a tray of cacti on the bench!

    3. I know ... so do I, my friend. Looking back, the past was so good then ...

      God bless, Tom.

  2. Your post made smile when I read that by your criteria I am "typically young". Listened once again to Edith Piaf and thought: "Well, I'll have to search the internet for the lyrics" cause I do not know all the wording.

    1. Of course you're young, Ladka. We can all be young if we want to be.

      God bless you always.

  3. Music is the greatest time capsule!
Aw, plagiarism's such a harsh word. I much prefer imitation ... as in 'the sincerest form of flattery.' Keep singing!

    1. Yes, plagiarism is a harsh word, Mevely. That is why I would never pagiarise anyone's writing. And yes, music is the greatest time capsule. If I could save music in a bottle; the first thing that I'd like to do is to save every note 'til eternity passes away ...

Hey, that's a good tune for a song!

      God bless.

  4. Music and photos work for me as a time capsule. They place me back to the time I listened to a song or took a photo. Works all the time. I never listened to Edith Piaf before then again I don't know french. :)

    1. You're right Bill; some songs do remind me of certain people in my life from long ago. Also places, like towns, cities or even restaurants etc ... places where I met someone special in my life.

      God bless you Bill.

  5. Dearest Victor,
Yes, that is true nostalgia in its purest form!
Haha, the ending was like a super surprise and very to the point (in plural that is...).
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Often we rely on nostalgia to remember loved ones, Mariette. People who influenced our lives and made a positive contribution. Including pots of cactus.

      God bless you.

  6. Ah! The good old days . . . Wait a minute! What DID I have for breakfast?
    Blessings, Victor!

    1. I know the feeling, Martha. There have been times I was so busy I even forgot to have breakfast. One thing led to another, one job after job and it was lunchtime when I realised I'd not had anything to eat. Happens often when I'm writing. I'm at the computer and lose all track of time.

God bless you and yours Martha.

  7. Certain songs bring you right back there.
About regrets - I think we all have them and if we don't we didn't learn anything. :)

  8. Remember there's a difference between plagiarism and quoting.

Anyway, the good old days were not so good after all. No internet and friends all over the world to talk to.

    1. I often quote myself, Mimi. It adds a certain je ne sais quoi to my conversation ... I don't know what it is.

      God bless.

  9. I dislike plagiarism I always do it my way. Surprised you copy "Imagine" I always thought that was an anti-religion agnostic theme song.

    2. Much better and nicer than my version from my little read (and with good reason) "Maybe it's Just Me"

      IMAGINE
Imagine there’s a Heaven Where good people get to go A Hell below us Which Bad ones will soon know Imagine all the people Living in this way
You may say I’m a blasphemer But I’m not the only one Why don’t you join us And the world won’t be so dumb

      There's more, but ...

    3. It is sad that so many have been influenced by the John Lennon version. It was a deliberate attempt to promote a disbelief in God.

      God bless you, JoeH.

  10. I don’t have too many problems remembering what I had for breakfast, as I have the same boring cuisine every morning. I’m going to reminisce about my mother’s idea of breakfast. You know - bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns, gravy and homemade biscuits? I gained 5 pounds on that one memory, so I’m back to yogurt and walnuts. Large sigh!! Blessings to you.

    1. Oh ... that's the ideal full English breakfast. How about the black pudding too? And button mushrooms. Tomatoes grilled or fried. Fried bread slices. Have I forgotten anything else?

      God bless you, Nells.
