There was a "religious" program on TV the other day and they were talking about forgiveness. They were explaining that we should forgive other people who have hurt us or done wrong because it is for our own good. Forgiving others will make us feel good.
Wrong.
I'll admit that forgiving someone can be cathartic and will help us move on in life; but that is not the reason to forgive others. Christ did not teach us to forgive others in order to feel good or better. Forgiveness is not an exercise of one-upmanship. I am better than you because I forgave you. When God forgives our sins He does not do so in order to feel better and happy. That is not why Jesus died. God forgives us because He is merciful and desires a one-to-one personal relationship with Him in Heaven for eternity.
In the Lord's Prayer Jesus said "forgive us as we forgive others"; meaning being compassionate, loving, merciful and caring. Not for an ulterior motive of being or feeling good and warm and cosy inside.
It seems to me there is a new trend to teach a modern Christianity which interprets the Word of God to suit our own selfish needs.
...the Amish taught a valuable lesson about forgiveness. A few years ago in Pennsylvania 9 Amish girls were murdered in their old room school house by a gunman. The parents quickly forgave the gunman, but they will never forgot.
ReplyDeleteThank you Tom. That is true forgiveness. To acknowledge the wrong done to us, and to consciously forgive it; but one need never forget it. Nor should we forget. Also, forgiveness does not always mean reconciliation. There are times when we cannot reconcile with those who have hurt us.
DeleteGod bless.
Dearest Victor,
ReplyDeleteGuess everything is being interpreted for 'convenience' as that is what people constantly strive for...
Hugs,
Mariette
You are right, Mariette. If something was wrong at the time of the Bible and the Commandments then it is still wrong now despite the passage of time.

🤓
DeleteGood point thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine. God bless.
DeleteGot to make sure when you forgive that you are doing it for the right reasons. Good reminder, Victor.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, Bill. Thank you so much and God bless you and yours.
DeleteI never thought about it that way. Thank you, Victor!
ReplyDeleteIt is all part of the "me ... me ... me ..." trend where people think of themselves first, Mevely. This so-called Christian program was implying that we should forgive so that we "me" feel better. They did not mention that this is not the Christian principle of forgiveness and turning the other cheek. God forgives because He loves us and is merciful; not so that He may feel good.
DeleteGod bless always my friend.
And that trend has been going on way too long, Victor. We should forgive only because Jesus forgives us and has asked us to do the same.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Too often is the Bible message misinterpreted it seems. This was on TV and many susceptible people will believe it.
DeleteGod bless, Martha.
God forgave me, only seems right that I forgive others though at times it is hard to do.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Happyone. God bless.
DeleteYou have explained it quite well.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mimi. God bless you.
DeleteI think we can forgive others because it is the spiritual enemy that causes us to do bad things. We all have to learn God's ways, knowing what is right and wrong, before we can change.
ReplyDeleteAmen Brenda.
