Time was ...

Times aren't as they used to be. The Times They Are a-Changin'

Someone asked the other day, “What was your favourite 'fast food' when you were growing up?”

I remember in them days we had no fast food. It was all slow cooked.

I ate at a place called 'home'. Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and we said prayers before eating. If I didn't like what Mom put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it. There was none of this pre-prepared fast food that comes in packets and the only way to get a square meal is to eat the packet and throw the food away.

In those day, you had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things that come to mind about them far off says.

Men would stand up when a lady entered the room. They would help her to her seat at the table.

People were perhaps poorer but they were happier it seems. Some people NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans, set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country or had a credit card.

People made do as best they could. I remember our toilet door had no lock. I used to sit with my leg stretched out towards the door and sing loudly. I forgot the door opened outwards.

My parents never drove me to school... I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed (slow).

We didn't have a television in our house until I was 10. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 10 PM, after playing the national anthem and a Christian epilogue.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home; but milk was, and some groceries and bread. Different vans delivered different goods.

Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the films. Celebrity singers did not need to dress provocatively or not at all whilst performing their songs.

Somehow, people respected each other more, and respected each others' opinions, or right to an opinion, even though they might not agree. Today, the style seems to be, "if you don't agree with me I should shut you up!"

Sad isn't it?

    1. I remember at school there was an artistic pupil called Tom. Good at painting and he had a camera. Was that you?

      God bless.

    Or not?

  3. I remember those days, Victor, and they were sweet and wholesome ones. As Christians, we can still practice those traditions of love, respect and honor for Jesus' sake.
    Blessings!

    1. It seems to me that there are fewer and fewer people practicing such wholesome traditions.

God bless you and yours, Martha.

  4. Dearest Victor,
Yes, the same way for me. I have to give my late Mom kudos for ALWAYS serving a home cooked meal till she almost reached age 91... even while undergoing dialysis. Quite a milestone and it is probably the reason that she lived that long and kept Dad alive till age 98.5. Although, Dad had to make do with some ready to heat meals in his final years without his loyal Chef at his side.
We still continue that way, we never have managed to become Americans that grab their breakfast someplace else + lunch + often dinner. It is a lot cheaper and above all HEALTHIER.
Prayers before a meal are still being said, even when on the road and in a restaurant. We proudly continue in the footsteps of our Parents and the generations before them! They KNEW what was important and they lived towards Eternity. Nowadays too many pushed religion completely off the table and with that all high morals and manners (as you mention here above!) and instead aim on instant gratification. They forget about Eternity and they ALL will DIE! What then?!
So how come so many are so easily 'brainwashed' by the false media and don't believe the Truth that their forefathers lived by?! Yes, they found happiness in little things and were content and even grateful.
Big hugs and lets pray that more return to the good manners for body and soul!

    1. You are so right, Mariette. Society has changed and values have gone out the window. I have never known such materialism and selfishness. Also envy. People these days resent others' good fortune and happiness.

God bless you and yours always.

  6. Life was simpler when I was a kid. I hardly recognize our times now. Sad and can be quite depressing at times.

    1. It can be depressing watching the world these days; but we must have faith, Debby. God is still in control.

It's good to see you visiting here again.

      God bless you.

  7. My mama was a fantastic cook. She slow-cooked everything on a wood stove until I was 11. The food was so yummy, even meatloaf. We ate at the table together every night. My favorite thing she made was cheeseburgers. I'm sorry that manners, along with good food, have disappeared. God bless you, Victor.

    1. Dear Nells, a lot of the good things from the past have disappeared or are disappearing fast. It's as if the world is intent on destroying its past and speed forwards to an uncertain doomed future.

      God bless you always, Nells.

  10. I remember days when people agreed to disagree and stayed friends. I also prefer film stars kissing with closed mouths. I REALLY dislike seeing people kiss as if they were hungry sharks taking bites out of each other. So common on TV these days. UGH!

    1. It seems as if the main purpose of these films is to shock. Everything is taken to extremes.

  11. Change is not always for the better.

It's up to us to behave the way we want others to behave, and pray a lot.
