Collections

Amazing the things we gather and collect over the years. Take the music and video field for instance. How many DVDs and music CDs do we have at home? Have we listened to all of them more than once? How many times can we see the same DVD feature movie; or the Series of that famous TV show we like?

Time was when all these movies were on VHS tapes; and our music collection was either cassette tapes or old vinyl. Then the system changed; and we had to change too.

Now it’s DVDs and CDs soon to be replaced by Blu-Ray, MP3s and a variety of other formats no doubt.

And there’s also all those photos we took with our modern cameras. In the old days it was a film which had to be developed and printed on paper. It cost money – so we were careful how many photos we took. Now it’s digital and we can click away to our heart’s content and put all these photos on CDs and build a large collection which we see once and then forget about it.

I wonder, will there be time in Heaven to sit back and see all those DVD movies we never have time to watch? Or our favourite TV shows which ran for several Series? Or all those photos we took of all the holidays and events we went to? And listen to all our music collections we amassed over the years?

And will they have a machine in Heaven which runs all formats regardless whether your memories are saved on Betamax, VHS or the latest digital system?

And how about our lovely shoe collection? One pair for each occasion? Or our lovely handbags … dresses … hats … ties … sets of golf clubs … watches … and numerous other things we buy and collect over a lifetime?

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6: 19-21.

    1. Nope ... got rid of the wooden spoons. Got wooden spatulas.

      God bless, Linda.

  3. I was flicking through the dvds recently and then realised we don't actually have a DVD player any more. Do hope heaven is better organised than I am.

    1. How nice to see you visiting here, Liz. Thanx. Call again soon and often, and invite your friends.

Our DVD player just broke. We play the DVDs on the computer now. Although, not that often.

      God bless you.

  4. I purged many of my things when we moved. However, the other day I noticed that the 'stuff' is starting to accumulate again.

    1. Same here, Kathy. I need another garage to fill up with junk.

      God bless always.

  5. Preaching to the choir! Mrs. C has a storage unit full of stuff that she and her kids don't have time to go through and save what is worth saving (almost nothing). It has cost over $-,000 so far and in a few years I will need another -! I tell her that storage units are where old crap goes to die. However, $-,000 is a lot cheaper than a divorce, plus she is worth it so...

Some stuff that you will never use is worth saving if it brings pleasant memories.

    1. You are very wise, JoeH.

I was looking the other day in the garage. It was full of junk we don't need; including old lawn mowers that no longer work. It needs clearing up so we can move other junk there.

      God bless you and yours.

  6. Make a few moves and you learn to keep only what is dear. All the rest is fluff!

    1. Good point, Lulu. Is it cheaper to build an extension instead of moving?

      God bless.

  7. So much 'stuff' with which we surround ourselves. Shoot, I'm old enough to remember when VHS tapes were introduced; unfortunately, I still have many sitting in the book shelf behind me. Why?
Now, you've raised a good question. After the joyous reunions with those gone before, how will we spend our days in Heaven?

    1. Oh don't worry, Mevely. Plenty to do in Heaven. There's harp lessons for a start. Then there's flying lessons when you get wings like an Angel. Also getting used to the robes we will have to wear. I'm told that they look like hospital robes which are open at the back!

      I wrote about it here:

      God bless.

    2. Open at the back?? I'm taking needles and thread with me when I go then.

  8. Dearest Victor,
Haha, all those systems are becoming obsolete and it is all about $$$ money in whatever currency!
Just this week I managed to convert several Microsoft system videos on DVD onto one that I can view on my MAC. Glad that task is done so my office desks are clear and almost empty. Got rid of MOST. The slides got done first, than all photos scanned and digitalized as well as scrapbooks. The home video tapes in different formats, all photos and now finally I will be digitalizing some old negatives for which I received on Saturday a Kodak scanning gadget. Will be so happy when it ALL is done. But we sure do enjoy looking at things now, before going to heaven... So I don't know if you want to wait till then, IF you get all your things lined up to view there?! πŸ€“πŸ“€πŸ“ΌπŸŽž

    1. I know exactly what you mean, Mariette. I had to transfer a lot of old magnetic tapes of my radio programs to digitised sound on CD. It took ages. Also, a number of 35mm slides of various photos to digitised CD stills.

      God bless always.

    2. Just like Lulu here above, moving really helps you being critical. And especially moving across the Atlantic as moving a m³ of 'just junk' would make you think twice with such a pricing... Haha!
Building an extension would be a lot cheaper.
      Happy weekend Victor!

    3. A friend of mine built an extension at the back of the house. A year or so later he built another one on the left of the house, then on the right. A year after that, he built one at the front. Now his house is surrounded by extensions and he can't get out of the house!

      God bless, Mariette.

  9. The thing that always nags at me, when someone passes, is that all the stuff is left behind and the one who treasured it is gone. It becomes meaningless and a burden on someone else to dispose of it. As the saying goes, you can't take it with you. That gives me pause to examine the condition of my soul. Thank you, Victor, for this timely reminder to lay up treasures in Heaven. Have a good day and blessings.

    1. You are so right, Nells. The person we have loved is gone and all we have left is their possessions as memories. I think my soul needs a bit of tidying up.

      God bless, my friend.

  10. Oh yes, VERY timely and most everyone I know has the very problem you EXPOSED for us. WE DO NOT have a storage building, BUT I do have 1400sqft of basement that I am sure is over half full of 'COLLECTIONS'. Funny that, when we lived in the motor home in the motor home there came a time when the rule "something new in, then something old had to go." And of course we always found room for what WE wanted.
Thanks again for kicking in some ideas that MUST be addressed. Then of course I am going to start getting rid of stuff, TOMORROW!
    Love sent from this side

    1. I like the idea of something new in, something old out. The thing is, we keep things just in case we need them some day. I started clearing out the garage. What a job that is.

God bless you, Jack and Sherry.

  11. We tend to hold onto things that we truly don't need. I'm especially struck by that fact as Danny and I are cleaning out Mom's house and finding loads of things we never knew she had. Already, have 10 bags of clothes to give away.
Let's make sure our treasure is truly stored in Heaven.
    Blessings!

    1. You're so right, Martha. Why do we collect so many things we don't need? I'll have to give some of my clothes to charity shops.

      God bless.

  12. It seems that no matter how much room we have we tend to fill it up with stuff! I enjoy my stuff but if it all went I'd still be happy. Like the hymn says, This old world is not my home, I'm just a passing through.

    1. We need to be more selective with what stuff we keep. I like that hymn, Happyone.

  13. I had a large cd collection, actually still have it and am currently listening to each one for one last time then I will give them all to the nearest thrift shop for someone else to enjoy. I also have a large DVD collection, arranged alphabetically by title and watch them all, beginning with A and working through to Y. One movie per night. I also have a collection of TV series I loved, also arranged alphabetically and I watch most of those too. There are some I've lost interest in, but I have the complete set of each, so eventually the kids can sell them to a collector and have a few $$$ for themselves. I don't have a lot of other "stuff" no fancy clothes, only two pairs of shoes, most of my books have been given away to the thrift shop.

    1. I understand about the CD and DVD collections. We have a few, but no time to watch them all regularly; especially when football is on TV all the time.

      God bless, River.

  14. Somehow i think that in Heaven, we will be concerned with other, more important things. That's why it's a good reason to be more concerned with those things now, isn't it.
