Generation Greed

It never ceases to amaze me how greedy people are. We have had the post-war generation, the 60's generation, the Millennials, Generation X and all the other types of nomenclatures. It seems we are now in Generation Greed.

Everyone wants more and more and they want it now and are not willing to wait regardless of the price it costs to get what they want.

Here's an example I noticed more than once on TV. We have a program over here where people come up with business ideas or inventions which they put forward to a group of would-be investors. They explain what the business is; they ask for a sum of money in exchange for a percentage share in the business.

"I would like £80,000 in exchange for 10% of the business!"

No doubt you have similar programs on your TV.

I find it astonishing when someone describes their business which at present is only starting off and they are offered the sum they seek from one of the investors but in exchange for a larger percentage of shares.

"I will offer you all of the money, £80,000, and I can help your business grow through the contacts I have and my expertise. But I want 25% of shares."

Time and again the greedy contestants turn the offer down and go away with no investment at all, and no business expert to back them. Their business may be small right now. They obviously need help and expertise but they turn it down because of greed. They'd rather have 100% of a small struggling probably failing business, rather than 75% of a thriving business with the expertise and contacts of a well known successful entrepreneur.

Often people turn down the offer and go away empty-handed rather than accept the money, or more important the expertise and business contacts, for a higher percentage of shares given away.

Can you imagine if God told Moses, "I will get all the Jews out of Egypt!" and Moses replied, "Wait a minute, how about their cattle and sheep and other possessions? And will you recompense them for the loss of their homes?"

I hope you don't think I'm being facetious with this Biblical example. But time and time again you see programs on TV where greed is the main factor, the main motivator and central focus of the show. And this washes off on the nation's psyche. Viewers watch these programs and believe it to be the norm. The right thing to do. Me ... me ... me first ... before the others. And that's how we have Generation Greed.

  3. Dearest Victor,
So spot on! We visited with some dear friends living now two hours driving away from us. We had to leave on Thursday, enjoying our free award night at the Grand Hyatt in Atlanta after having picked up our shoes at a real cobbler (he gets shoes/boots and other leather pieced shipped in from all over the USA as there are so few cobblers left...) and some pieces as a quality dry cleaner. We started off with breakfast yesterday, then we dropped off my favorite travel fountain pen from Mont Blanc for repair. The lady at the store explained that young people are no longer being taught to write in cursive... they cannot do it anymore. Even if we request their signature on the documents being send out to Mont Blanc for the repair and shipment, they hardly can sign!
With our friends we also discussed this further after arriving at their home for lunch in heavy rain. There is NO empathy anymore. It is all about a selfish attitude and all about instant gratification. Very, very sad and we also discussed that with this general moral decline we see all around us, it is because so many have dropped their religion. They worship themself! Or they live for sports or hobbies or vacation. They worship sports... The modern day Golden Calf.
Very sad and the coming generations will harvest the bitter fruits of what they themselves are sowing.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Yes, you got a good point, Mariette. The present generation seems obsessed with self and with wanting more and future generations will suffer the consequences. People these days say they want to save the planet and the environment yet think nothing of consumerism gone mad. Over here people change their cell-phones on average every 9 months or so, even though it is still new and functioning. They want the latest model of everything to keep up with fashion.

My cell phone is so old that all the instructions are in Latin. When someone phones me the answering machine says "Ave" instead of "Hello". The numbers on the keypad are in old Roman numerals: I II III IV and so on.

I received a text the other day which said "I LV U"
What is "U" in Roman numerals?

      God bless always.

    2. The Roman alphabet originally did not have separate symbols for 'U' the vowel...
But! The 'V' was used instead..!

    3. Dearest Victor,
So very true and WHY do those environment and planet concerned people and groups say NOTHING about all the pollution caused by the Russian invasion into the Ukraine? It shows that they only talk and do NOTHING!
As for the Roman numeral V, it is 5.
      Hugs,
      Mariette

  5. You definitely describe today's world. I am amazed at supposedly 'intelligent' people who will mortgage their lives on TOO big a home, and credit card debt that would sink a ship. I KNOW a man who took all his 401K savings out just to pay his credit card debt and in a year was back in debt for STUFF!
Anyway Yep this group wants it all and they want it NOW! SAD. He will supply our NEEDS according to his riches.....
    He has ours. and more!

    1. Yes Jack, I am amazed at how people get into so much debt; like the one you mention who has spent his pension money. Over here there's a scheme whereby people who own a house can get a loan on the size of the house (£xxxxK) which they can spend on holidays, cars or whatever. When they die the bank takes over the house and their children inherit nothing.

Very sad indeed what people get up to.

God bless you and Sherry. Take care.

  6. Generation Greed ... I love that term!
What you've detailed sounds exactly like one of our favorite TV shows: Shark Tank. Yep, it usually exasperates me so, I wind up yelling at the pitcher(s) who just don't 'get it.' Or won't.

    1. I believe it is the same show as in the UK. Over here it is called Dragons' Den and the investors are called dragons who will offer you money for your business or invention.

Often the pitchers go away with nothing rather than accept a deal for help and contacts into the business world.

      God bless you, Mevely.

  8. Most people do not grow up in homes where they are taught the purpose of life is to bring glory to G-d. Instead they are taught to "grab all the gusto they can." It's sad.

    1. That is certainly true, Mimi. In many families God and Christianity to not feature in peoples' lives. So materialism rules instead.

  9. Yes, we have that show and sometimes it is the business experts who are greedy. I do agree with you about the greed, but often it is belief in their own value rather than greed. Sometimes they turn out to be right. Also these start up businesses also often have other backers and if they give up that extra 15% it leaves them with almost nothing, and they lose control of their "Baby." I do get your point, and Moses asking to be compensated for housing is a funny yet accurate analogy.

    1. I understand and agree with what you say here, JoeH. It seems to me that greed is becoming the norm in the world today. You see it in the TV adverts which often imply a person is nothing unless they buy or use the product advertised. They deliberately make the viewer feel small and inadequate unless they buy the product.

      God bless you.

  10. Possibly I watch the wrong TV channels, but I haven't seen any of those programs here in Australia. I do see advertisements where people need or want money in a hurry and a sparkly fairy pops up and says "Nimble it". 'Nimble' is a fast loan company which will loan just about anybody fairly large amounts of money, but the ads don't mention the hefty interest rates and far too many people get sucked into debt this way.
I get the point about the business and the shares, if people can be patient enough and the business does well, the shares become worth more and the shareholder makes more. But too many want the money immediately and lose everything they put into it if the business fails.

    1. Those quick loan companies can, and do, get people in more debt than before. It seems to be the done thing these days that people want more and more and they want it now regardless of whether they can afford it or not.

      God bless, River.

I think "more more more" is sometimes just an attempt to fill a spiritual void.

  12. As Myra mentioned, we have Shark Tank here in the States that works just like the show you've referenced here, Victor. I think greed has always been a problem for a lot of people, and it happens when one thinks only about oneself. Don't think that's how God intended us to live,do you?
    Blessings!

    1. So many people these days are living life not as God intended. They don't seem to have God in their lives as their primary focus. No wonder the world is in the state it is.

  13. We should be greedy for learning the ways of our Heavenly Father, but unfortunately that is not particularly in vogue right now. If we think only of ourselves, there will be no room for helping. Think outside the box about something besides self, and experience how much more blessed you are. Thank you, Victor for the reminder. Blessings.
