God Speaking

It is said that we have been on this earth for millions of years. I know it feels like it to me when I experience aches and pains … but that’s another story. So let’s stop interrupting and get back on course.

For all these years, as long as man could reason and comprehend … (some women believe this has never happened, by the way).

I really must stop interrupting myself.

As I was saying … for all these years, as long as humanity could reason and comprehend, God has spoken to us and shown us the Way to Him.

No generation has been left without a sure sign of His existence and the Way to Him.

At first, God spoke through people like Abraham, Moses, Elijah and other prophets. He spoke through the many poets and songsters who wrote the psalms. And through ordinary people so that their contemporaries could understand.

Had He appeared as a majestic Super Being, a Divine Ruler, Creator and King of the whole universe, omnipotent, all knowing and all powerful; He would most probably have caused havoc, fear, awe, and eventually total submission of the human race He created. Hardly the acts of a loving Father.

So instead, God chose the gentler way of speaking to us through enlightened open minded people who could translate His message to generations in a language they could understand.

He taught His people of His love for them, and for His plans to come to them in person, as often prophesised in the Old Testament.

But many did not listen.

Later on, when they were ready, He did visit His creations on earth as promised. He came in human form, just like us, in the shape of Jesus. He showed His people many signs of His Divinity through healing miracles and raising of the dead. He died for them and us, and was raised from the dead.

But many did not listen.

When Jesus went to Heaven He sent the Holy Spirit to guide us, help us, and be with us every step of the eventual Way to the Father.

Many received Him with open hearts.

But as for countless others …

They’re not listening still.

  4. Wonderful post, Victor. I have always wondered why God chose to talk to us the way He did/does. For example, why didn't he choose to continue to walk the Earth after the Resurrection so that all generations could interact with Him in a more "tangible" way? Why didn't he choose to be born to us during a time when video cameras were invented so people in future generations could see everything He did? And so on and so forth. Yes, these are my silly human thoughts, and I know there is so much I do not understand. Nor should I. But I still can't help but wonder. And during those times, I am so thankful for the gift of Faith so that they are easier to accept. God Bless you.

    1. Thay are not silly questions, Michael. But sensible ones.

If God had appeared in human form (Jesus) at a later time, say when video cameras were invented, as you say, the chances are that He would have been laughed at. People would have thought He is a charlatan or magician of some sort. Or at best, a mad man who claims He is the Son of God. Today's world, Michael, is just not willing to believe.

If Christ appeared in modern times (today) as a super Being, (like Superman), able to fly, be omnipotent, all knowing and so on; certainly people would believe in Him. Even in modern times. But that would be belief through fear, awe, and confusion. Hardly the act of a loving God.

So He appeared as Jesus at a time when people would receive Him through Faith alone. Like the Disciples and His followers did.

      God bless.

  5. Hi Victor! It's such a puzzle that we don't listen to the Still, Soft Voice; and then get turned off by a Harsh Word. Makes you wonder what we'll ever accept, doesn't it?
I just have to decide that however God comes to me, I need to listen. And He will speak to me in the words and tone He knows I'll recognize. I just don't have any excuse not to hear Him.
    Beautiful, faithful post Victor.

    1. Yes Ceil. It is sad that today's people are just not willing to listen to God's voice. Today's reading in church was about the Transfiguration when Jesus was on the mountain with Peter, John and James, and while He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Then they heard God saying: 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!'

Can you imagine if that happened today? Would people believe then?

      God bless.

  6. My wife says I'm deaf, or near deaf. But the few times I've felt God was speaking to me, I listened! But there are probably countless of other times he was speaking and I didn't realize it.

    1. You're not alone, Manny. Many of us, me included, often do not hear God speaking. Perhaps we are distracted by other voices.

God bless you and your family.

  7. A really good post, Victor. So many hearts are closed off today. No doubt mine is too because of so many distractions. I guess that's why Lent is such a blessing! (Though I tend to "flunk" it each year. Lol.)

    1. Sadly Mary, too many hearts are closed. As long as we keep trying, listening and believing ... God will understand and forgive.

      God bless.
