What's the point of it all?

 

Something that has no point is pointless - like a pencil!

I was wondering  about priests, vicars, ministers or other religious preachers? Do they always see tangible results in their work? Does what they say, and do, really change lives, and keep them changed until the day these souls meet their Maker?

I suspect that when such a priest gets to meet God face to face, he may well be asked: "And how many of the people I put in your direction have made it to Heaven?" I wonder what they would answer then?

How many people do priests really lead to Heaven?

This is a great responsibility for priests and such like religious people. Are they really changing lives by their own example? Or are they just self-bemused shepherds just herding wild cats in all directions? What evidence is there that their works have led one more person towards Heaven?

How about you and me?

We write our Christian Blogs week in week out; but do we see any tangible results from what we write? Is anyone really taking any notice of our pearls of wisdom? Or are we writing just to satisfy our own egos, and to say to God, "There you are. I've done my bit writing about Christianity, now let me into Heaven!"

What is the point of writing a Christian Blog?

Few amongst us, don't check our Blog statistics to see who has read us. There's a bit of pride and self-satisfaction in all of us.

What about those comments we get on our Blogs? Are they just pleasant platitudes from like-minded Christians? Or do they actually influence anyone anywhere reading them? 

 

Where is the tangible evidence that one individual has been somehow touched by what we write to make him search more and discover, for the first time perhaps, the love of God?

Are we preaching to the already converted?

If all we are doing is writing Christian posts for other Christians who either don't bother to comment or just say something nice to be polite; then what's so clever about that? What good have we done?

Time for Reflections.

OK ... let's all stop now and take a deep breath. I hope that what I have said above has not discouraged anyone from continuing with their Christian Blogs.

Remember the parable of the sower where Jesus teaches that some seeds ended on the footpath, and others on rocky ground, and others among thorns and only a few on good ground?

In this parable the seeds are the Word of God spread amongst many who would not listen.

The sower is God teaching us. Or Jesus preaching throughout the Holy Land. Or the prophets and Disciples. The sower is of course all of these. But he is us too. Yes ... you and me. Writing our own Blogs.

We have a duty and a responsibility to evangelise and spread the Word of God to everyone. Not just to Christians.

If the Word of God was meant for just Christians we would dig a long furrow and make sure that the seeds are planted one by one carefully in the furrow and none are wasted. But Jesus does not say that. He spread the seeds far and wide and if people do not want to listen that is their problem. Not yours.

And that's where social media and our Blogs come in. They are the open fields where we spread our seeds in the hope that someone somewhere might listen to the Word of God.

That's why it is important to check our statistics and see which posts got more hits, and what subjects attract attention from readers old and new.

Encourage one another.

That's why it is also important to comment on other peoples' Blogs, especially if we are already Christians and agree with what is being said, (or disagree even). Our comments serve as encouragement for people to keep on posting, and even if we disagree with something, they serve as a discussion and a learning opportunity from one another.

The worst thing is to visit a Christian Blog and say nothing.

The early Christians, after Christ's Resurrection, may have disagreed with each other perhaps, but at least they discussed their opinions and encouraged each other to go on with the task of building the Church of Christ.

And so should we when we visit other Christian blogs. We should comment not only on other peoples' blogs but also respond when others comment on our Blogs. And if possible, also visit those who commented on our Blogs and return the courtesy.

Today, we are no different to those early Christians. Social media is the wilderness longing for the Good News; and our Blogs are the fields where we plant the seeds which will grow and bear fruit.

Let your Blog be the one Jesus would want to read.

On Reflection ... What's The Point?

I was painting the house the other day. I've started with the living room and then I'll move on from one room to another. Then it occurred to me ... what's the point?

What's the point of painting these walls and ceilings when in a couple of years' time I'll do it all over again?

A painter expert told me that first I should scrape the old paint off, clean the walls properly, paint an under-coat, and then when it's dry paint another coat.

What nonsense. I just paint one cover over the other. Much quicker. Just splosh the new paint on to the old one. Over the years the walls have become thicker and thicker with one layer of paint over the other. I bet our house all round is now six inches smaller because of the many layers of paints on the walls and ceilings. Pretty soon the house will be so small that even the mice will have hunchbacks.

And that's what led me to think ... what's the point of it all?

What's the point of doing something over and again. Like painting the house. Mowing the lawn. Vacuum cleaning. Dusting. Washing plates and cups and cutlery. Washing clothes. It's all repetitive and leads to nowhere.

Come to think of it. What's the point of wearing clothes anyway? Some people I know have to buy clothes several times a year to keep in with changing fashions. Spring collection. Summer Collection. Autumn and Winter too. And on and on the fashion industry gets us to buy too many clothes we don't need.

What a different world it would be if we wore no clothes at all? Angels are often depicted with no clothes on. They don't seem to mind.

Do you realise how less pompous people would be if they all wore no clothes? These days people use their clothes to influence one another. Power dressing, that's what it is. A man would have the latest fashionable suit on; a woman would have padded shoulders to make her look bigger and more impressive; or the latest shoes or jewellery or fancy hat.

With no clothes on we'd all be equal. What would matter is what sort of person we are - kind, gentle, knowledgeable, helpful and so on.

Without clothes on my boss at work would be much kinder if we could all see her naughty bits. And I suppose we'd be much nicer too if she could see ours.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that there are many things in life with no point at all.

For example, what's the point of me writing books or blogs if I'm going to be ignored anyway? After all, there's only you and me reading this right now. And not everyone seems to comment in support or in disagreement anyway.

As my old school friend Willy Shakespeare put it:

So there you have it. Stop painting the house and wearing clothes. But keep Blogging.

BLOGGING CHRISTIANS

 

So ... we blog and blog and blog.  What for?

Is it to feed our egos? To proudly be out there on the Internet and read by everyone far and wide? Or is it to count how many people visit our sites and how many comments we receive; or how many "likes", (I nearly wrote licks!), or +1s we get on our Facebook and Google accounts?

I'll have you know that this blog constantly gets a number of hits in the double figures every month; if you consider that the first digit on the counter is always 0.

So ... why do I then spend so much time on the computer Blogging away day after day and night after night?

I think that as Christians, we all have a duty to do so if we possible can. It is our way of evangelising, to spread the Good News we believe in, to meet other Christians, to encourage each other, to discuss various view points, and most important, to pray for each other.

As some of you may know, I pray for everyone who comments on this Blog. I also pray for those who visit here without commenting, but have to be less specific and hope that God knows who they are.

Why bother to Blog?

Here we go again. Blogging week in week out with very few, if any comments, and "followers". Makes you wonder why we bother to Blog!

We really never get to know who visits our Blogs and never leave a comment.

Comments often tend to be from the same loyal and friendly readers and, welcome as they are, we'd all like to see new visitors and commenters if we're really honest with ourselves.

It's good of course to have our loyal readers encouraging us and supporting us in what we write. And it's also good and polite for us to reply to their comments on our Blogs; and to visit them on their Blogs and comment there.

It all builds up and strengthens an Internet Community of like-minded Christians spreading the Good News of God. These are real people at the other computer far away from you; not just names and avatars on our own computer screens!

But as I said eralier, we never get to know those people who visit us and never leave a comment. The silent visitor reading what we write without our knowledge and moving away without saying a word. What's on their mind, I wonder, when they read what we've written.

To some, what we write can turn out to be very important indeed. There are many people "out there" who have never heard of God or Jesus and what we write on our Blogs could very well be the first time they get to hear about Christ.

Let us not assume that everyone everywhere knows about God or believes in Him even.

It could very well happen that what we've written starts an interest in an individual far away and perhaps encourage him or her to learn more about God. Our Blog could well be a starting point, the first few steps, of a journey of discovery into Christianity.

What a priviledge that is. To learn that our Blog has brought someone to Christ. Can you imagine that? What we've written has made someone to get to experience the love of God.
 
If only one person turns to Christ because of our writing ... just one person ... then all of our posts over the years would have been worthwhile.

Of course, we'll never know this; and the chances are we will never meet that one person who was introduced to and found Jesus through us.

But when we get to meet St Peter at Heaven's Gate he will look at his computer database - I'm reliably informed he no longer uses old parchment papers ... less reliable!

Anyway, Peter will look at his computer monitor and say "Do you remember that post you wrote all those years ago? Well, it brought one person to Christ and Heaven!"

And that should bring a smile to our face, and his.

Enough of all this Blogging.

Someone asked me the other day: Why do you Blog?

I didn't have a good answer.

"Is it vanity?" I thought. "Do I really have anything important to say? And does anyone really care what I say?"

So I asked my old school friend William Shakespeare what started him writing and why did he bother. This is what he wrote:
