Inadvertently perhaps, but on her Blog yesterday, MEVELY, set me a challenge without meaning to. She mentioned the five songs that mean a lot to her. I thought about this, and as an ex radio presenter I would find it difficult to choose just five. Five hundred perhaps, but then, you don't have the time to listen to all of them.
So here's five. The first one used to be played a lot at home and on the radio many years ago.
Goodness! Me! Victor...I grew up with Domenico Modugno... He was an Italian singer, songwriter, actor, guitarist, and later in life, a member of the Italian Parliament.. He is known for his 1958 international hit song "Nel blu dipinto di blu", for which he received Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year... I know what there is to know about this guy..... And...he died in Lampedusa in Sicily of a heart attack, on the 6th August 1994 (aged 66).. I'd forgotten about him..l really had..l'm covered in goose bumps..(do geese get bumps)..Thankyou..... And to Mevely of course...! :0).
I'm gonna Google him now, make a mug of lemon tea, with honey..and listen to a few tunes..! :) I've time before the ladies coffee morning...! Made my day Victor! Made my day! :O). ♬·¯·♩¸¸♪·¯·♫ ♬·¯·♩¸¸♪·¯·♫ ♬·¯·♩¸¸♪·¯·♫
Meant to say Victor..Finished your book..'As I Quote Myself' last Friday..Great..I've put it next to 'Feline Catastrophes' on the settee next to me, so l can have a quick read, while the adverts are on....! :O)
Opened up just the same as yesterday Victor... I am just listening to a few of his songs on uTube.. And just heard Volare... This was his biggy though.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quJVER_NmdQ
Thank you, Victor, for allowing us a glimpse inside. Two, in particular, resonated. To say I'm stunned and delighted is an understatement. Back in the early 70's, I first cruised aboard the (now-defunct) TSS Fairwind. The ship's band, il Draghi, used to perform Piove every night -- I was so taken by it, I purchased their LP. Mind you, I couldn't pronounce any of the lyrics other than "Ciao, ciao bambina" but went around singing that part for months after. As soon as the music began to play here, it took me right back! The other I love is Demis Roussos. My favs of his are My Friend the Wind and Goodbye My Love. Anyway. Who could ever go wrong with Don Williams?! I've never been fond of S&G, but Bridge over Troubled Water could definitely be considered a hymn. I've played "Do Not Be Afraid" so often! Again, thank you for sharing these wonderful songs.
PS - I like the term, "Radio Presenter" (v. disc jockey)!
What a coincidence we seem to love the same music. I did say you would have been great on my radio show.
I did not know Demis Roussos was known in the US. I know the songs you mention so well.
It was difficult choosing just five songs. There's also Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, The Beatles, Monkees, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Cliff Richard and so many more ...
It's me, again -- back to being Mevely. (Whew!) You're so right about finding it difficult to choose some and leave others behind. Those I published yesterday reflected only my happy times; perhaps it's better to say, those dearer to me evoke deeper emotions. (Unlike my Tom-the-musician, I'm lyrics driven.) In full disclosure: Hey! (Julio Iglesias), Even Now (Barry Manilow), You'll Never Walk Alone (Gerry +), and even tho' I don't care for Garth Brooks, The Dance.
I went to see Barry Manilow live. I took someone with me and she was amazed that I managed to get tickets to his open air concert. We got back home at 2:00 in the morning.
Gerry and the Pacemakers "You'll Never Walk Alone" is the anthem of the Liverpool Football Club, (soccer). Here's Fr Francis version of the song, (amongst others):
SWEET songs, good stuff. I remember the first song. I think I heard it in a Bar in xxxxxx Italy. Great singer in a dirty suit but had a strong voice.... I am sure it was in the Gulf, at Toranto (coulda been Naples ;-) )
Bridge Over Troubled Waters is a hymn, as far as I'm concerned, Victor. As a teen, I actually sang it at a priest's ordination (Anglican Church). It will always be one of my favorites. Blessings!

Volare is one of his best songs. Here';s how to get Vecchio Frac:
DeleteGo to the top of this page.
Click on "Good Music" second line on the right.
Choose "Torna A Surriento" or "Il Mare"
Voila
The guitar playing at the beginning of Vecchio Frac is great.
God bless.
Great! Thankyou Victor..Have left a little

Well, it seems Blogger's up to its nasty tricks again. I didn't realize they pegged me as Anonymous .... this is Myra/Mevely.
ReplyDeleteAh ... I forgot ... we called them Radio Presenters to discourage people just playing their own disco music.
DeleteGod bless.

I like Garth Brooks' "If tomorrow never comes".
So many good lyrics which make the song last for ever in our memories.
God bless, Mevely.
