Slow down a little

We seem to live in a world that is always in a hurry. People rushing to work or to do their daily chores. People wanting everything instantly rather than having to wait. People speeding on the road or always doing one thing after another as if there's no tomorrow. I guess this is not helped by 24 hour news and social media with quick changing and often conflicting headlines.

The thought occurred to me that if we want to be more like Jesus perhaps we should slow down a little.

You never read about Him in the Bible rushing from one place to another. There are moments when He stopped to rest and pray, when He went away from the hustle a bustle of the crowds seeking His attention.

When He met up with those in need He often did so with patience, and dealt with people on a one-to-one basis. He did not click His fingers and heal a multitude in one go.

One day, on His way to Jairus house whose daughter had just died, (Matthew 9:18-26, Luke 8:40-56, Mark 5:21-43), a woman who had been suffering from a haemorrhage for twelve years came behind Him and touched His clothes. He did not say to her, "just wait your turn, can't you see I'm busy?"

He stopped and seeing her faith He healed her and then went on His way to Jairus house.

On another occasion, we see Jesus tired and weary from His travels and He sits by a well to have a rest, (John 4:5 onwards). He is approached by a Samaritan woman who came to draw water from the well. In those days, Samaritans and Jews did not associate with each other. Jesus starts a conversation which ended in her and her townsfolk believing in Jesus.

So if even Jesus found town in His schedule to stop and rest, should we not also slow down and every now and then take time to enjoy God's creations and to thank Him in prayer.

  2. Haemorrhage..was this word known/used back then...
    Just saying....
And there are three types of Haemorrhaging......
    Arterial, Venous, and Capillary....!
But..The illness does'nt matter, as Jesus still cured the
    sick..!
And the fastest Jesus would have ever traveled was on
a donkey, entering Jerusalem..Though the Apostles were
always running to keep up with him...!

Must get on..just back from Lidl...Bit of shopping to sort
out, nice and slowly, taking my time, as l do with
everything, why rush..you'll get to the kingdom of heaven,
    one day...Hopefully..!

  3. Dearest Victor,
Guess in today's society we are all forced to live at a certain pace. While in rural India or Indonesia, we often wondered if those people, living a very simple life, were not better off than we are?
At least we have seen the two different worlds and at quite a different pace. More the time of our Parents and they all were strong believers; that together sustained them!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. You are right, Mariette. Some societies take life much easier and slower; and probably enjoy life more. We are losing our focus away from God.

      God bless.

  4. Very well written and expressed my friend. WE all need this, even we retirees move too hurriedly. I must tell myself many times slow down (If I don't Sherry does!) ;)

  5. You are right Victor, it is good to slow down. I love where we are living at the moment, we back onto fields and the sea is very close by. It is semi rural and very peaceful. I would never want to live in a busy area, and I never find myself rushing to do anything - just quietly enjoying life. God bless.

    1. You are so lucky to live in such a wonderful place. City life can be so busy and so overcrowded.

  7. Great advice, Victor. I remember my father regularly admonishing, "Haste makes waste" -- and found out (on more than one occasion) how right he was!

    1. Too true. The problem is that society seems to hurry us to go along quickly.

  8. One reason we like living here in a little town. It is a lot slower and quieter pace of life.

  9. Thanks. I spent my young adult life doing everything. Always heading to some place or another.

  11. We all need to heed Jesus' example to slow down and take stock of the situations right in front of us at the moment. If we don't, we could miss out entirely in how we could make a difference in His name.
    Blessings, Victor!
