There is a trend in the world with more and more people who were at one time Christians turning their backs on their faith and walking away.
Are you one of them?
Secularism is on the rise. That much we know. But added to it, many once Christians are now also walking away.
I cannot speak for where you live, but here in the UK, regular church attendance, that is once a week, all denominations combined, is about 5% of the population. You can hardly call us a Christian nation, although many would identify themselves as such when asked in the street. Often church attendance is limited to baptisms, weddings and funerals; and these are considered as social occasions and not religious in any context.
Many are Christians just because their parents were Christians, or because they were brought up this way, or because it is a badge they wear when asked what they are. Christians in name only but not in fact. Even if they do attend church.
Some, especially the young, identify themselves as not believing in anything. They may call themselves atheists, agnostics, non-believers or whatever; but what is significant is that they wear their particular badge with pride. It's as if to believe in a living God is an antiquated notion that is long past its day.
Christians are leaving the faith for many reasons. Some because they have had an argument with their priest or vicar and have left the church not to return again.
Others because they have suffered a tragedy, illness or death in their lives and blame it all on God for not looking after them. (If my protector does not care about me why should I care about Him?)
Whilst others have had a dispute with family or loved ones and do not accept their relatives' faith and have as a result distanced themselves from them.
And others have become too busy with the pressures of life, or by the alluring pleasures it offers, that they have just neglected their faith never to return again.
Whatever their reasons, many Christians are leaving the faith yet believing, in all consciousness, that they are good people really, and destined to Heaven ... eventually ... for eternity.
But there's more ...
Aside from Christians leaving Christianity; there's another growing trend in the world of not wanting to know about God or to learn about Him and follow Him. It's as if the whole world has put their hands on their ears and are shouting " La ... La ... La ... I don't want to know!"
Christianity is mocked, derided and banned in many lands and new generations are encouraged to distance themselves from it. Time was when you would find a Bible in every hotel room. Now many such establishments have removed the Bibles so as not to offend their clients. Churches and preachers are teaching a new watered-down type of Christianity where anything goes as long as you are happy, comfortable and not offending anyone.
"Not everyone who calls me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the Kingdom of
Heaven, but only those who do what my Father in Heaven wants them to
do." Matthew 7:21.
Hi Victor, there is no way I would stop being a Christian. I have loved my time in the Lord, and would not want to be without the teaching of the Holy Spirit. The scriptures say that many shall fall away from the faith, and that the Lord will return for the remnant. I believe that time is near. Without the Lord in my life I could never have had my miraculous healings and many other things. God bless you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brenda for your faith, and healing. God bless.
Delete...there the MAGA Christians have corrupted the faith. Check out my post that will be published 12 pm eastern time.
ReplyDeleteI am not referring to anyone in particular, Tom; political or not. I believe that generally, world-wide, people seem to be moving away from Christianity.
DeleteLet us (try to) love one another as Jesus loved us. God bless.
See also my response to CM below.
DeleteThis is a non-political Blog. But a Christian one.
How timely, this message! Presently, I'm struggling to get up and out to each Sunday's services -- not because I don't love the Lord -- but because certain practices rub me the wrong way. I sometimes even find it difficult to pay attention to Pastor Janet's message. I suppose, as they say, "That's life!" ... but it won't stop me from visiting with Christ every day. Like one of my favorite FB memes that says, "Not all places of worship have walls and a steeple."
ReplyDeleteI agree that God is everywhere and can be worshipped everywhere. As best we can we should visit our church regularly to benefit from worshipping together as a family of God; and to encourage others to do the same.
DeleteWhat is happening world-wide, is that people are leaving the faith altogether never to return.
God bless, Mevely.
P.S. - Coincidentally, I just switched on the TV and caught the end of a program. There was a priest ( https://frcedric.org/ ) He was saying that Christianity is adding value to other people.
DeleteWe are all a gift to each other. Years ago a priest said to me that going to Church gets us closer to God in Communion. But we are also a gift to each other and not to go to church is denying others of our presence, of our gift to them. Without our knowledge, others may gain comfort and encouragement by seeing us there in church worshipping with them.
God bless.
I don't know the numbers to give a percentage of church goers, or Christians here in the states; but have read church memberships are down. I think one reason is too many churches have become big business and that turns people off. A 2nd reason I believe is how they've mingled with politics, again a turn off. And I think the 3rd reason is many in the various churches don't practice kind and caring policies to all people. Some are so extreme, it seems more like a cult than a church. I tend to judge people by how they treat others, and how they live their lives vs badges they wear.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your contribution, Sandy; and your explanation about the States. A recent program said that in the States regular church attendance is 47% of the population (compared to 5% in the UK).
DeleteA worrying trend is also that some churches preach a diluted (kind-sounding) message so as not to upset their followers. They are not so much Bible based teaching the realities of the existence of the devil, his mission on earth, and his intent on driving people away from God. Modern thinking sees the devil as a euphemism for being naughty. He is a cartoon character representing badness; rather than the reality that he is a living spirit doing his best to derail us from our Christian faith.
God bless always.
What you have said here is true and very scary. I am seeing this trend, too. It's grievous. We believe in and serve a loving God but when people turn against Him -- eventually it's not going to be good.
ReplyDeleteMany thanx Barbara. I believe God is a gentleman. If we move away from Him, He lets us go and says, "OK ... have it your way!"
DeleteHowever, He never stops from encouraging us to return to Him and be received with open arms like the prodigal son. In life, there are many opportunities, (or nudges), for us to come to our senses and return to the fold; as I know from experience. As Jesus said, He would leave the 99 sheep to go searching for the one who has gone astray.
God bless you always.
There is some good news on this side of the pond, Victor. It seems like the younger generation here in our country are finding meaning and purpose in traditional Christianity, with particular focus on Catholicism and its grand traditions. Let's all pray for there to be a true revival of the faith! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the good news from the USA, Martha. Over here, they said on TV, that our young generation is turning to "new age" thinking, like believing in the Universe guiding our lives, the power and rhythms of certain stones and their vibrations, astronomy and similar types of beliefs.
DeleteI do hope that young and old do turn to God and Christianity. Sadly, over here belief in God is often mocked and derided on TV and the media.
God bless you and yours.
Victor, I have to agree with Martha. I feel we are having a revival of sorts here. I hope and pray anyway. Christian movies are everywhere. The new Pope is awesome.
ReplyDeleteWe had to leave our Church after being there over 30 years for staying liberal - we just had to take our self's and leave. It broke my heart.
You have to be willing to die for your faith -
It's such good news that there's possibly a revival and turning back to God.
DeleteI understand when people leave one church for another. It can be heart-breaking of course, but one has to be faithful to Biblical teaching and Christianity.
God bless you, Sandie.
I find where I live people seem to be getting more receptive to the Word of God. I pray it continues. We need revival!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's very good news, K. God bless always.

ReplyDeleteLots of people can't even treat others with kindness, they instead spew hate. The hate seems to gather more followers who like to be part of a crowd. Take them individually and they can't explain why they are doing and what their purpose is. I think there are too many followers who don't have a clue and are lost. God has the light to shine on the darkness these people live in. We need to celebrate the goodness that God provides.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Bill. Yes, kindness and compassion seem to have gone from peoples' hearts ... and replaced by hate.
DeleteLet us pray for Divine enlightenment on people.
God bless you.
Our Nationalist Christians are driving people away.
ReplyDeleteLove always.
I don't know what you mean by Nationalist Christians, CM. This is a non-political Blog; but a Christian one.
DeleteI note that Tom has also made a political comment referring to one kind of individuals. This does not help the discussion and some readers have commented to me privately about it.
My article refers to Christianity in general seeming to be in retreat world-wide. People are losing faith in God. We can only wonder how He feels about this; and in the meantime we need to unite in prayer that humanity may find its way back to Him.
God bless.
As Peter is quoted as saying in John's gospel, to whom could I go? He alone has the words of eternal life.
ReplyDeleteAmen, Mimi. God bless you always.
DeleteI agree with Martha Orlando. There is a revival taking hold in my area as well. It is encouraging to know the Lord means something to the younger generation. I also pray that it continues and becomes a movement in the UK.
ReplyDeleteBlessings
That is certainly good news from your area, Irish Cherokee. Like you, I pray this continues and happens over here in the UK too. Joining you in prayers.
DeleteGod bless you, my friend.
