Kindness
With a heavy load from the seeds he sowed
And if you see your sister falling by the way
Just stop and say, "You're going the wrong way"
Yes, show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
Lend a helping hand instead of doubt
And the kindness that you show every day
Will help someone along their way
Yes, show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
Yes, show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets

Be not afraid

Tuesday, 12 August 2025
Fear
But there are times when fear itself breeds more fear and grips us to the extent of ruling our lives.
Few of us are really immune to it.
The fear of losing our job and not being able to provide for our families. The fear of missing payments on our mortgage and losing our house. The fear of failure and being unable to work again. The fear of our very lives crumbling in front of our eyes.
The fear of a marriage breakdown. Infidelity. Divorce and its many heartaches. The tearing apart of a family. How it affects one's children. Separation. Costs. Access to children. Being no longer a part of their lives. The feeling of failure and betrayal.
The fear of growing old. Being alone. Especially at night. Forgotten with only one's memories for comfort. The fear of being unable to cope any more. The fear of losing control as others decide for you what is best. The fear that everyone you relied upon is now no longer there.
The fear of being ill. With no prospects of getting better. Relying on others and perhaps being a burden on family and friends. The fear of incapacity. The fear of being unable to make any decisions. The fear of being unable to afford treatment. The fear of un-ending pain.
The fear for others. Children. Grand-children. Other relatives or friends. How they are coping. How will they cope. The fear of the future and what it might bring. In an ever changing world, the very fear of opening a newspaper or seeing the news that something or other has happened that will adversely affect you or your loved ones.
Few of us can claim not to have experienced the real darkness of fear as it grips our minds, our imaginations and indeed our realities.
Because all these fears outlined above, and others besides not mentioned here, have actually happened to others and can very well happen to us.
One day we are living our lives happily and the next ... a quick change in circumstances can easily propel us into any of the fearful scenarios described above.
Christ taught us not to be afraid. That our God loves us. He cares for us. He will not let us perish. He is always by our side.
Yet ... these fearful events are real and have happened to others, those who love and obey God, and those who don't; and can so easily happen to us. So we feel, perhaps, that our fears are justified.
Until we consider, for a moment or two, how God feels about our so-called justified fears.
Isn't our fear, justified as it might be, a sign that we don't truly trust Him? A real profession of faith that, when it comes down to it, we don't really trust Him? Somehow, somewhere, in the back of our minds, we harbour that doubt, that worry, that when things will go bad for us, as they will inevitably be for some of us, we don't really trust Him enough to be by our side in our moment of need.
Now how do you think God feels about your lack of trust in Him?
We may not be able to help these fears when they attack our minds, perhaps sub-consciously, but we can fight against them with prayer. Real prayer. Through gritted teeth even. Admitting to God that we are fearful and yet, trying, through every fibre of our being to trust in Him, in His love and in His caring.
Fear will try to grip us all. It is how we handle it that is our salvation. And with His grace and help we will succeed.

Our Father
"Our Father who art in heaven....."
“Yes. How can I help you?”
”Hein? Who’s that?”
“You called Me. I’m listening …”
”I didn’t call anybody … I was just praying … The Lord’s Prayer! Our Father who art in Heaven …”
“That’s Me … Your Father in Heaven … now carry on praying …”
“Eh … Hallowed be Thy name …”
“Ha … Do you remember when you were very young you used to say ‘Harold
be Thy name’? For a long time you were convinced my name is Harold;
until someone put you right. What does it mean anyway … Hallowed be Thy
name?”
“Eh … hmmm … does it mean you are Holy?”
“That’s right … carry on …”
“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.”
“Hold it just there … Do you really mean what you just said?”
“Sure, of course I do …”
“Or do you mean ‘Thy will be done’ as long as it is what you want? Do
you really accept My will all the time? Even when it’s not convenient
for you, or when life gets a little difficult?”
“Well … sometimes when things get really bad I get very worried …”
“At least you’re honest. Remember this always; when things are really
bad for you it is still My will. I allow it to happen but I never
abandon you. I’m always close to you … all you have to do is trust Me.”
“Gee … thanks.”
“Carry on …”
“Give us this day our daily bread …”
“Let’s stop again … This means that I will provide for all your needs.
It’s good of you to ask; but rest assured that I will always provide you
with what you need. Go on with your prayer …”
“Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us …”
“Even your neighbour?”
“What?”
“You never forgave your neighbour after that argument you had a few days
ago. In fact you still hope that you’ll get even some day …”
“But … but … You know it was his fault!”
“Of course it was … and he did apologise. But unless you truly forgive
him, you truly no longer hold a grudge and have no ill-will or
ill-feelings towards him; it doesn’t count does it?”
“That’s not always easy …”
“I agree … But true forgiveness means that you no longer wish any
retribution or revenge against those who have hurt you. Sure, you’ll
always remember the wrong done to you, but let that be a reminder to
forgive them once again and to pray for them.”
“Can I go on now?”
“Yes!”
“And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil.”
“This bit is a reminder that Satan is always there trying to take you
away from Me. He tried to tempt My only Son Jesus, so you’re not going
to be much of a challenge to him. Whenever he tries to lead you astray
repeat those words over and again and I will come to your help.”
“Thank you …”
“It’s getting late; go to sleep now!”

Song Saves Twenty Babies
Some years ago Father Francis recorded a Pro-Life song entitled A Cry from the Heart which was released originally on casette tapes and later on CDs.
The song has saved many babies from abortion. Their pregnant mothers heard the song and decided not to proceed with abortion.
Years
later Father Francis met a young boy who told him that his mother heard the song
when pregnant and decided not to have an abortion. The boy said he owed
his life to the priest. Father Francis has received over 20 other
similar testaments of babies being saved.
I've put this and other Father Francis Maple
songs on You Tube - Check them out HERE.
Father
Francis has sung in public over the years in malls, shopping centres, bus stations and at his own concerts and has
raised over £1m for charity.
He has also written several books (sermons, cooking recipes, jokes), and has contributed to many newspaper columns and Catholic newspapers and magazines. He has spent a lot of time travelling throughout the UK leading Missions in various churches.
Handle me with care, mommy help me to form.
I am ten weeks old, and I know the time will come
when you will give birth to me.
The gift you gave to me are a pair of bright blue eyes
So some day I will see you smile and love me.
I’ve already got my arms and a little podgy nose,
And at the end of my feet I’ve got five little toes.
I look forward to my life, ice cream and slimy snails,
teddy bears and little fairy tales.
Going for walks in the park
Running home before it’s dark.
And being tucked into bed with a kiss.
Where are we going today?
Am I in a boat or bus?
Why are we lying down?
Being drawn on four wheels?
And we go through the door
and there’s people dressed in green.
Everything seems so strange and so clean.
Mommy if they hurt you just let out a scream
and I know someone will come to help you and me.
Mommy what’s going on I am starting to cry
Come quickly they are forcing me to die.
They are killing me mommy, they are pulling me apart
My arms and my legs and now they’re at my heart.
And I won’t see the sky, or the grass or the trees.
and I won’t see the moon, or feel the breeze.
I love you mommy dear, you know I really do
But I only wish you could have loved me too!

Feelings and moods
We are all susceptible to feelings and moods; like love, anger, melancholy, humour and so on.
For instance, I sometimes wake up grumpy. At other times I just leave her to sleep and go downstairs and make a cup of tea.
I often take my wife morning tea in my pyjamas. But is she grateful? No, she says she'd rather have it in a cup.
Honestly, I love being married. It's great to find the person I can annoy for the rest of my life. She is family. I also love my family. If it was not for my family I'd be arguing with perfect strangers.
I want my children to have all the things I could not afford at their age. Then I'll move in with them.
Before I got married I used to sell furniture. It was my own furniture. I've always been poor. Even as a child my parents were very poor. So poor that we used to tie a dead hedgehog to a stick and use it as a toilet brush. We could not afford the things people take for granted these days. I used to lie in my bed and look up to the sky and think, "I hope one day to afford mending the roof!" I often dreamt of winning the lottery. Incidentally, how come you never see a headline like, "Psychic wins the lottery"?
My friend is very rich. I'll admit that I envy him. He has two swimming pools in his garden. He keeps one empty for people who cannot swim. I don't envy or covet his wife. I certainly would not want to meet her in a dark alley at night. She is very thin, with a white pale skin, and long black hair all over her back. None on her head; just down her back.
Sometimes in my moods I ask myself a lot of questions; but never find the answers. For example, do aliens from outer space have tattoos? Do they wear glasses, or have beards, or earrings and piercings like we humans do? Do they like Italian food, or Greek, French or Chinese?
How do they communicate with us? Do they have a translator App which translate their language to English? What if they land in Spain or some other country?
Why do we have so many Apps these days? Our grandparents got on well without them. They had books and libraries instead. Now there's an App for everything. An App for this and an App for that, how to open a can of beans, how to wash behind your ears or fart in a bottle. What's wrong with society these days who cannot live without an App telling them how to do it?
There's even an App that corrects my spelling and grammar when I type on this computer of mine; even though sometimes I want to deliberately write something wrong to make a point.
I just read in the papers that the man who invented "Autocorrect" has just died. May he restaurant in peace!
Here's a song about feelings to make you feel better.

Maestro
I've always wanted to lead an orchestra, but unfortunately I don't read music or play any instruments. I've been told conducting an orchestra is easy though. All you need is a stick. Here's a video of me leading our local Orchestra.

Time Flies
If I were to play this song ... ... ...
How many would remember it was a hit 60 years ago?
What were you doing then? What can you remember from that year in 1965?
And if I were to play this song ... ... ...
Would you remember it was a hit 50 years ago in 1975? What were you doing then and what can you remember from that year?
How about this ... ... ...
It was a hit 40 years ago in 1985. What do you remember from that year? Any good, or not so good, memories?
Yes, time flies. Let us look back with wisdom and not regrets. And let us make good memories for our future and that of our loved ones.

Road To Discovery
What a terrible winter evening it was that day when Father Ignatius had to visit Theodore Luxton-Joyce at his mansion.
It was about six o’clock in the evening, it was dark and it had been raining all day. It was that kind of annoying drizzle that you get for hours on end sometimes in England. Father Ignatius was glad to be indoors in the warmth when the phone rang and Theodore’s butler asked him to come over urgently. There had been some sort of emergency which he was “not at liberty to discuss on the telephone”, as the butler put it somewhat pompously.
The priest put on his coat and went out driving in the dark and in the rain. Something which he hated to do immensely.
Half-an-hour later he’d arrived at Theodore’s mansion and he noticed a police car parked outside.
The butler opened the door and said “let me take you to the library where all will be explained to you!”
Father Ignatius nodded and said nothing, following the butler and leaving a trail of water dripping from his coat and wet shoes.
Theodore was in the library with two policemen and a man in civilian clothing. As soon as he saw the priest the man in civilian clothing got up and signaled Father Ignatius out of the room again. “May I have a word Sir?” he mumbled as they walked out of the room.
Once out of the library the man asked, “Are you Father Ignatius?”
“Yes … I am” said the priest.
“It’s good you’re here Sir,” said the man, “I am Detective Chief Inspector George Drayton … we’ve been called because Mrs Luxton-Joyce has gone missing.
“She left here at about lunchtime to visit some friends down South. She drove her own car and has not phoned her husband to say she’s arrived safely, as previously arranged.
“Mr Luxton-Joyce should have heard from her two hours ago. He phoned her friends and they say she has not arrived.
“He’s in a bad state Sir … he refuses to see a doctor and he’s asked for you.
“We’re pursuing our enquiries with other police forces and hospitals … at this stage we’re keeping an open mind on what may have happened.”
“What do you mean?” asked the priest.
“Well … him being very rich and all that … anyway. I’ll keep a policeman on the premises should you need to contact us urgently …”
“You don’t mean …” Father Ignatius hesitated, “you don’t suggest she’s been kidnapped?”
“Well Sir … at this stage we have very little to go on … there would have been a phone call by now had she been abducted … we’re tracing all phone calls. I should be grateful if you could calm him down a little … in case anyone phones.”
As they entered the room again the detective nodded and the two policemen got out leaving the priest alone with Theodore.
Father Ignatius said a silent prayer in his mind, a habit he’d developed long ago, and approached Theodore quietly and placed his hand on his shoulder. The man looked up from his seat and said “Where is she Padre … why has she not phoned?”
His eyes were red albeit he maintained his composure.
“I pray it will be all right Theodore …” replied Father Ignatius gently.
“I’ve been praying too Padre … I’ve been praying so much I’m tired of praying … I doubt God is listening …”
“He is … just keep believing Theodore,” said the priest, “would you like some tea?”
Theodore shook his head.
“I couldn’t have anything … I’m so worried Padre … I couldn’t live without her … not after losing my first wife … if anything happened to her I’d die …”
“Hey … hey … hold it right there!” said Father Ignatius firmly, “you’re running ahead of yourself Theodore … just take a deep breath … that’s right … hold it there … now exhale gently. Do it again a few times.
“Let us trust in God … let’s keep calm … the police are doing all they can and they’ll let us know as soon as they hear something …”
“Yes … sorry Padre” mumbled Theodore, “but … what if she’s been kidnapped … I’d give everything to have her back …”
“Don’t even think about that for now …” interrupted the priest, “let’s keep calm shall we …”
Theodore nodded and said nothing for a few moments, sitting there staring at the telephone and willing it to ring.
“She’s changed my life since I met her …” he said eventually. “I never thought I’d meet someone else again … not after my first wife died and at my age … then Rose came into my life and changed it …”
Father Ignatius said nothing, preferring to let the man speak and perhaps calm down a little. Theodore continued.
“I so hate to be away from her … I have to travel sometimes for business and it’s hell being away from her …
“When I’m in a hotel alone I go crazy just thinking of her … when I’ve finished my business meetings and I go to my room … I dread it … I dread being there without her … I sit there and close my eyes and imagine she’s with me … I hold out my hand and it’s as if she’s there … I feel her love … I feel her presence near me …
“We may be miles apart … and when I phone her I can see her smile right there as we talk …
“And when we finish talking I just sit there in my room … I close my eyes and I’m with her … I could almost touch her … I love her so much Padre.”
Father Ignatius smiled gently.
“That’s wonderful …” he said, “have you ever told her how you feel?”
“Good Lord no …” replied the elderly man, “you don’t talk like that to a woman old boy … she’d think you’ve gone soft in the head … you must be strong old boy … expected of you and all that … what?”
Father Ignatius smiled again noticing that Theodore had rediscovered his usual impetuous character of speaking spontaneously without thinking.
“I believe you should tell her how you feel about her …” said the priest, “I’m sure Rose will love to hear what you’ve just told me … and how much she means to you …”
“But … but … it goes without saying old boy … she should know how I feel … there’s no need for me to spell it out …” blurted Theodore forgetting for a moment the situation they were in.
“No Theodore …” said Father Ignatius gently, “it does not go without saying … it needs to be said … and repeated often …”
“Sheer nonsense …” interrupted Theodore, “amorous words and lovey dovey affection is for young people … not for the likes of me and Rose …”
“That is not so …” continued Father Ignatius gently, “there is no age limit on love …
“Love is like a delicate flower which needs to be nurtured and cared for tenderly to help it grow and develop …
“I have met many couples in my days as a priest who love each other deeply … yet they never say it … they leave things unsaid … and perhaps take things for granted …
“Until sometimes it’s too late …”
The priest bit his lip as he realized he’d perhaps said too much. Theodore looked up at him as if awakened from a nightmare.
“It’s not … It’s not too late … is it Father?” he mumbled, his lip trembling uncontrollably.
It was the first time Theodore had addressed the priest as Father instead of the usual Padre which he was accustomed of using. It punctuated perhaps the seriousness of the situation and the depth of despair which Theodore had reached.
At this very moment God must have intervened, because before Father Ignatius had time to reply the door opened and the police inspector came in.
“We have some news …” he said, “Mrs Luxton-Joyce’s car was found half-an-hour ago in a ditch in a secluded country lane. It appears she took a detour on her way to her friends to avoid road-works. She lost control of her vehicle in the rain and slipped in the ditch causing her to lose consciousness. She’s been taken to hospital in an ambulance …”
“Is she all right?” shouted Theodore standing up.
“Yes sir … she appears not to have been hurt seriously … I have a car waiting to drive you to the hospital.”
Father Ignatius drove back home with a thankful heart that fateful evening when God heard his prayers once again.
And Theodore discovered for the first time not to keep his love silently hidden within his own heart.

Tantum Ergo
On Holy Thursday, following the Mass of the Lord's Supper, the Blessed Sacrament is transferred to a separate place, often called the Altar of Repose, where the faithful are invited to participate in adoration. This adoration continues throughout the night, allowing for a period of prayer and reflection as the faithful join Jesus in his vigil in Gethsemane.
The Tantum Ergo is sung as the Blessed Sacrament is transferred to the Altar of Repose.
Down in adoration falling, Lo! the sacred Host we hail, Lo! oe'r ancient forms departing Newer rites of grace prevail; Faith for all defects supplying, Where the feeble senses fail. To the everlasting Father, And the Son Who reigns on high With the Holy Spirit proceeding Forth from each eternally, Be salvation, honor blessing, Might and endless majesty. Amen.
