Reflections in my life

We probably look in the mirror several times a day. In the morning when we comb our hair, when we put on our lipstick and other paint on our face, when we brush our teeth, perhaps in the car when we have a final check before an important meeting and so on.

But do we think when we look at the mirror?

Look at this woman in the photo below:

She is holding her face with her left hand. That is obvious. But why in the mirror she is holding her face with her right hand?

Why did the mirror flip the photo left to right?

And why did the mirror flip the photo left to right and not vertically from up to down? Why don't we see the mirror image upside down but flipped from left to right?

Whilst you're pondering this, and perhaps giving me some answers, here are some other facts about mirrors and reversals of images, or life in general.

Did you know that in some zoos they put mirrors in the flamingo enclosures? This is because flamingoes will not breed in captivity unless there are a certain number of birds in the flock. So they look at the mirrors and say, "Ah ... there's quite a few of us. It is safe to breed because there's safety in numbers!" The zoo keepers put the mirrors to fool the flamingoes that it is safe to breed.

Did you know that the robin will attack his reflection in a mirror or in a window with curtains drawn? He is probably the only bird to do so. Intelligent or stupid?

Did you know that some fish would recognise their reflection in a mirror and not think it is another fish?

And a baby would not recognise his reflection until he is 2 years old at least?

Did you know when athletes run round the track when racing they always run anti-clockwise. If you were in a helicopter above them you will always see them running anti-clock wise no matter which country the track is in. As a result their left leg is shorter than the right!

Now for this next fact I need to rely on your total honesty and integrity.

Look at the photos below, and without checking anywhere else, can you tell me ... ... ...

Is the real Statue of Liberty holding the torch in her right hand or her left one?

Don't check ... decide on your choice NOW.

Apparently, in tests most people get the answer wrong and say she is holding the torch in her left hand. In fact, it is in her right hand.

It is the same with British coins. Many people believe the Queen is facing left on the coins; but she is facing right.

And finally ... when you look in the mirror; what do you see?

Do you see Christ there? Are you a reflection of Christ in your daily life? Are you Christ to somebody you meet every day in your life?

  2. Hi Victor, I would have said the right hand to the statue. My cat responds to mirrors as you have said other animals do. If we are watching television programs late at night in bed, she sits on the bed between us and can see the tv screen in my mirror on a piece of my bedroom furniture. She reacts to it if animals come on the television and she sees them in the mirror. When I look in a mirror at myself my eyes just see the 'me' in the flesh. My mind is on Jesus most of the time.
Regarding these words that you wrote on your post Victor 'We probably look in the mirror several times a day. In the morning when we comb our hair, when we put on our lipstick and other paint on our face,' ... I am surprised that you too put lipstick and other paint on your face :-) God bless.

  3. Very well done. I seldom see Christ in the mirror, BUT for awhile I will be checking. THANKS.
On a lighter side I installed a new rear view camera. I had a choice of Real or mirrored image. The switch was not simple to reach once installed. I thought I would try REAL. I learned the hard way NEVER use real in rear view, you could get killed and think you were in the UK, oh wait........

    1. The rear view camera should show the same image as you would see in a mirror. I put a rear view camera on the front of the car and I did not know whether I was coming or going!

      God bless Jack and Sherry.

  4. I used to pass the statue every day commuting on the SI ferry and later see it while eating lunch in the park so I said right hand.

I only hope to not be the anti-Christ when I look in the mirror.
I don't think I am very Christ like, I hope that at the least, like the physician, I do no harm.

    1. Look my friend, even if you are not Christ like, (few of us are), we should at least try to spread His way of life and love on to others. I am sure you're a good example of that.

      God bless you, JoeH.

  5. I did guess the right hand for the Statue of Liberty before reading on to find out I was correct, Victor. Yes, the most important reflection we can see when we look in the mirror is that of Jesus.
    Blessings!

  6. We have a statue of liberty that is in someone's front garden. Your story reminds me of a painting a doctor friend's daughter gave him one year as a gift. The doctor in the painting was leaning over a patient laying in a bed and Christ's image was standing right behind him. I always remembered that and thanks for bringing back the memory. We may not see Christ in the mirror but he's there right beside us.

  7. Another great close on which to ponder! BTW, I was SURE Lady Liberty was holding the torch in her left hand. Got me!

    1. Yes, me too! I was sure it was the left hand. I got this from TV. They said most people believe it is the left hand. Same as the British coins; most think the Queen is facing left. They did not explain why most people think so.

      God bless, Mevely.

  8. A wonderful lesson in "reflection". You mentioned the robin and his vanity. . .We had cardinals who would fly into our windows thinking there was a cardinal there. Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. I did not know about the cardinal, Cathy. Interesting that they too would attack their reflections.

      Happy weekend. God bless.

  10. I said the right hand. I've been there quite a few times and visited when you could still walk up into the torch.
I would hope people see Christ in me.
When I look into a mirror I wonder how did I get old so fast!

    1. We all feel old when we look at the mirror. The problem is with the mirror not us. Mirrors should be recalibrated every so often for accuracy.

  11. I find myself looking in the mirror less than I used to. Since I wear a mask so much there' no reason to check to make sure I have food stuck between my teeth.

  12. Reflecting Christ is an ongoing process of putting on Christ daily. My prayer is that i do so a bit more each day.

The only time i look in a mirror is to check and make sure my part is straight when i'm brushing my hair. Never have been much for mirrors.

  13. We should all try to reflect Christ in our lives.

    God bless, Mimi.
