The Lawnmower

Hello and welcome to Time For Reflections.

Once upon a time there was a man who wanted to cut the grass in his garden but unfortunately his lawnmower was broken. So he thought, “I'll go next door and I'll ask my neighbour if I could borrow his lawnmower”.

But then he thought again.

“Oh … my neighbour is such a fussy person, he may give me the lawnmower but he will say ‘Oh be careful how you use it. Make sure you don't bump it against the tree; and there aren't any pebbles in the grass that could be caught in the blades.’ He will also expect me to clean it afterwards and return it in pristine condition. Honestly … what a neighbour I’ve got. But I really do need a lawnmower … … …”

So with all these negative thoughts in mind, he went next door and rang the bell; and when the neighbour opened the door he said to him, “You can keep you damn lawnmower! I don't want it”.

You know, I suppose it's the same with all of us. When we ask for something. Do we believe really that we’ll get it?

Would you go to the bank for instance to ask for a loan if you don't think the bank will give you that loan because of your bad credit rating?

How about when we pray? Do we really believe that God is listening to us and will give us what we ask for? Do we believe that He has the power to give us what we ask for?

Maybe we ask for healing or whatever else … do we honestly believe deep in our heart that God will answer our prayers? Because if we don't then what's the point of praying? Is it just a routine matter? Something to do just to tick a list and say, “well I prayed about it. It’s now in His hands!”

Unless we truly believe that God is listening and in His way and in His time He will answer our prayers then there's no point in praying at all.

Thank you very much for listening. God bless.

  1. HaHa! In a few moments after l've written this,
and had mug of Earl Grey with lemon and honey,
l shall be unlocking the many locks on my garden
shed, and look for my Flymo..
As i've just returned from an eye test in town, it's
verry clever..as they test them while you wait..all
o.k. one eye on one side of my nose, the other
on the other side..Job done..! :O).

Well...l don't know about anyone else, but, l get
    exactly what l ask for..even talking to God..l don't
pray as such..but from time to time l turn to him,
and suggest we make a 'deal' in return for my
    wishes..AND..guess what..l works..it's usually
about personal things, football, and recently,
the war with Russia..and believe me..God can
be a bit naughty to..won't bore with examples!
And when l speak to God, l'm usually stood up,
and being Sicilian of course l wave my hands
and arms about a lot..I never kneel and pray,
l consider it..'over the top'..(Did you see that
    film)..
So l pray and speak to God in my own way,
always have and always will..and were both
happy with that..That's me and God of course!

    1. Such good news to hear the eye test was OK. Praise God.

Praying can be just talking with God; just like talking to a friend. Thanking Him for all He does for us, (important), and also asking for His help; like we would do to our parents. Also important to listen to God. He often speaks in our silent prayers.

God bless you and your family, Willie.

    1. Yes, that is true. A friend in need is a pain in the neck.

      God bless, Tom.

    1. I know that Jesus never said that; but then, no one borrowed a lawnmower from Him.

      God bless, Linda.

  6. VERY WELL STATED! I like your logic. But I think for me he has had sympathy and said, "Here, ye o little faith!" Well that's how I feel sometimes. ;-)

    1. That's true, Jack. Often we pray, but our faith is not strong enough to believe we will receive.

God bless you and yours always.

  7. Dearest Victor,
Being your 28th viewer on your video from April 28...
One never knows when asking someone else for a favor.
But with God it ought to be pure Trust and so often this has been proven to humanity over the thousands of years.
Most of us are too impatient when asking something.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Well said, Mariette. We are often impatient and not trusting enough when we pray to God. He understands and forgives.

      God bless you and Pieter.

  8. I just mowed yesterday which tends to be a twice weekly job here this time of the year with all the rain and cool nights. Eventually it will slow down to maybe once a week when it gets hot. The next time I pull the Toro out of the shed I'm going to think of you and the lawnmower and my neighbors. One I couldn't borrow, as it's a riding mower and well...I'm clueless on that type of machinery. The other is a battery operated thing...it's quiet but seems to require a battery change mid yard...so I might have to venture father than my next door neighbors for help. Popped in from a mutual friends blog, it's always fun to meet new bloggers.

    1. How nice to see you visiting here, Sandy. Thanx. Please call again soon and often.

I certainly wouldn't use a riding mower. Too frightening. I'm not so sure that battery operated mowers will have the power to cut the grass. They're inventing lots of battery operated things like vacuum cleaners and hedge trimmers. Whatever next? Battery operated cars?

It's good to meet new Bloggers. Invite them over here too sometimes.

      God bless Sandy

  9. My mother used to tell of the first time I was tasked with selling Girl Scout cookies -- "I don't suppose you'd like to buy any of these?" Even at 10, we knew I was never destined for a career in marketing.
Great example you've shared, and I always enjoy hearing your voice!

    1. What a kind thing to say about my voice. Thank you Mevely. These are old radio tapes which I have digitally re-mastered. It's a while since I recorded something new. I wonder if any of my readers wish to suggest a subject to talk about.

You are very good at marketing. Thank you for advertising my book on your Blog and for your Amazon reviews.

God bless you and yours always.

  10. Although it might not be the answer we want, God does answer our prayers, Victor. I think He simply enjoys hearing from His children as any Father would.
    Blessings!

  11. It's a joy to talk to our Heavenly Father and let our requests be made known. If it's good for us, and within His will for us, then we'll get it. If we don't get whatever it was, it wasn't what was best for us.

  12. I’m sorry to say that sometimes when I pray about things, I continue to fuss and stew about them. Then, I have to pray about my unbelief. You are right if we do that what is the point?
Thank you Victor, for This wonderful analogy and reminder. Blessings

    1. We all tend to fuss after we have prayed and we still worry about something or other. It is human nature. God understands and forgives us.

Nells, I am still having problems connecting to your Blog. Is it still active? Have you changed the URL (website link)?

      God bless.
