A Packet of Faith please!

So many things to buy in the shops these days. So many choices ranging from toothpaste, to drinks, to fruits and vegetables and even sex items like condoms, would you believe! Choose your preferred brand or quality and put it in your trolley for all to see.

Why can't we buy a packet of Faith, I wonder? In regular size or the large economy pack.

Let's consider another scenario. Let's say you have a health problem.

You go to the doctor. He diagnoses the problem and suggests treatment or an operation of some sort. You put your health and your life in his hands and the hands of the consultant, surgeon, anaesthetist, nurses and so on. You don't check their credentials, qualifications and success rates. You're too ill to do that.

In other words you have Faith in them and the health system they work in.

Why can't we have the same level of Faith in God?

Is it because we can see the doctors and not God; not directly that is?

We have Faith in many people in life. Not just doctors. The bus or train driver, the air-plane pilot, the electrician who fixes our fixtures at home, the car mechanic who fixes our car and so on.

When it comes to God, who is far more capable and Almighty than any of these mere humans, we sometimes hesitate. We pray. We wait. We wonder whether He has heard. Or whether He will respond. When? How? Will it meet my requirements as I have prayed and suggested to Him?

We never ask such question to the people we deal with. Will the bus get there safely on time? Are you sure you know what you are doing with electric work? Are the car brakes safe now you've played with them?

The world is in turmoil right now. We all have different views on what is happening and how we would solve it. We all have different opinions and confidence on our leaders.

But do we have Faith in God? Is it enough Faith?

More important - does He believe us? Is our Faith just a show to convince ourselves and others that all will be well; albeit deep inside we have our doubts, our fears, and our suspicions.

"To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see." Hebrews 11:1

Let us read this as many times as it takes for its message to think in.

To be sure of what we hope for. To be certain of what we cannot see.

Are we sure about what we have prayed for to our unseen God? We should be. Otherwise what is the point in praying?

We don't need much Faith. Just as much as a grain of mustard seed. Matthew 17:20

And don't worry if the doctor laughs at you. Some people are amused by small things!

  1. I do agree with you victor. I feel a lot of our failure to trust is the failure to see God in the physical. what is sad is why can't we see Him in the spiritual? He is always working, always awake, always alert, and always there. As you have pointed out, we show faith in so many ways and in so many people. How can we miss out on the ONE who never leaves us?

    1. It's human nature, Bill. Somehow, either we have been created to be sceptical, (and God knows why He created us like this), or we have developed doubts and cynicism over the generations as we've had our fingers burnt. Somehow, we find it difficult to believe what we cannot see - God in the physival, as you say.

Remember, in the Old Testament God was more visible as a bush of fire or as a voice. For example when He gave Moses the Commandments.

      God bless.

  2. Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.

Victor, well said... we have this promise.

  3. These are stressful times, indeed, Victor, but my prayer is that people's faith in God will be strengthened, and that those who do not know Him will turn and come back to Him. Believers can rest assured that God is always there, so we have eternal hope.
    Blessings!

  4. EXCELLENT, Victor! I love your paragraph: "More important - does He believe us? Is our Faith just a show to convince ourselves and others that all will be well; albeit deep inside we have our doubts, our fears, and our suspicions." THAT is a sermon-in-a-sentence!

  5. How appropriate! I can empathize with everything you've illustrated -- excepting airplane pilots/mechanics (but that's just me). As you recently pointed out, perhaps Jesus was sent to earth in human form so men could have faith in what they saw. Again I'm reminded, "help my unbelief."

    1. Yes Mevely, Jesus came on earth in human form so that He can experience our emotions, and so that people could have faith in what they saw. He is experiencing our emotions right now and knows how the world feels.

      God bless you, Mevely.

  8. Unfortunately we live in a society that wants instant answers. They are inpatient and not very friendly people. Their concerns are number one. I try and remember that there are many others who also need God's love and it's more that just me. Be patient, God hears you even if you can't hear him. Pay attention because he does answer you when it is the right time.
I'm sure there are tons of people who rather buy a large amount of faith, it's easier than believing.

  10. We are in such uncertain and stressful times, I know not all do but I find a pray helps.
For those friends who do not pray, I say try to think of something positive.

    Stay well Victor.

    All the best Jan

  11. Good post, Victor. Reading the Path of His Passion and seeing how we like the disciples lack faith. The more intimate you know the Savior..the strong your faith in HIM. Camping in HIS WORD is the key!

    1. I agree, Wanda. Our faith grows gradually as we continue to pray and trust His Word.

  12. Faith is knowing He has already answered, and all is well. Without that, i'd be sunk.
