Suicidal ...

According to a program on TV, here in the UK, about one in four young people have suicidal thoughts.

I ask myself why!

I don't claim to be an expert in any thing, or to have any answers, but it seems to me that young people today are facing more intense challenges and difficulties than previous generations.

The world is changing fast; and not for the better. This is not the same world of twenty or so years ago. The recent global pandemic has changed our way of living and our way of thinking.

Added to this, young people today are seeing life through the prism of social media.

A prism is a piece of glass or other transparent material cut with precise angles and plane faces, and when light goes in it is broken down into its constituent original colours. This means a white light becomes like a rainbow. I am sure you've seen it.

Likewise, young people today are influenced by social media, the Internet, celebrities' lifestyles, musical and fashion trends, and so on.

More so than any other previous generations.

They see and read what others are saying and they believe that this is how they must also think.  To think differently risks making an individual an outcast, outmoded, non-fashionable, or an old-fogey even.

Youngsters are "told" what to think about various issues like the environment, politics, consumerism, veganism, world population, relationships, religion and various other topics that are aired in today's easily accessible communications networks.

Added to this, they face the additional pressures of being unsure about their future. There's too much negative news and they have doubts about their careers, well-being and even their very survival.

The global economic situation and competition is such that many will not be able to achieve their full potential and do better than their parents.

With computerisation, mechanisation and global commercialisation many will find it difficult gaining employment which will provide them with a home in which to raise a family.

I read recently that many young people are suffering from depression as a result of the pandemic. Others are so concerned about the perceived real threat to the environment and the future of the planet that they truly believe the world will end within ten years or so.

One young on TV, he was about 20 years of age, vowed never to get married or have children because the world will soon end anyway. He reminded me of a work colleague many years ago. He too was in his early twenties and was convinced that the world was over-populated. He was married and told me he had agreed with his wife not to have children and add to the world's problems. He was sure they would have a bad life. I never found out whether he ever had children or not. But had he done so, that man would have had grand-children by now.

With ever increasing secularism in a materialistic world it is no wonder that many people are losing hope and doubt their very existence.

Every generation has been through difficult times when the world seemed at its darkest. Yet somehow, we lived through it. At least most of us have. We struggled through somehow. No doubt there are many reasons and theories as to why and how we managed to get through the bad times to where we are now.

We owe it to the young of today, we have a duty to instil in them their lost hope. To teach them courage, perseverance, and most of all to focus on what is really important in life.

"Keep your mind set on the things that are in Heaven, not on things here on earth." Colossians 3.

  1. Romans 12:12 ~ Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
When there is hope in the future, there is power in the present, and since hope is the foundational quality of all change, there is considerable reason to be excited.
The best recipe for happiness and contentment I've seen is this: dig a big hole in the garden of your thoughts and put into it all your disillusions, disappointments, regrets, worries, troubles, doubts, and fears. Cover well with the earth of fruitfulness. Water it from the well of contentment. Sow on top the seeds of hope, courage, strength, patience, and love. Then when the time for gathering comes, may your harvest be a rich and fruitful one.

  2. ...suicide is a serious problem, particularly with younger people.

  3. Strange, for some reason I thought everyone had thoughts of suicide, but just did not act on them. I have, but then I get to thinking I won't be here to see how the problems of life will be solved by those left behind. I think I should be here to solve the problems methinks. That is not said in jest, and NO I have never even come close to following thru on suicide or I would not be here of course.
BUT this is a very needed problem to be solved and LIFE today does add to the load on the population. I am not against children, glad we had a couple, but I would not want the responsibility of raising a child today.

All that said, Our TV (social media included) do determine our life's thoughts. What I KNEW about courts came from TV, man have I really had an eye opener, real courts are NOT like the ones on TV, Perry Mason, Judge Judy, etc. I am still in shock awaiting answers that are delayed month after month..... When does it end???
Thanks for your prayers, YOU have been a blessing to me.
Sherry & jack on this side just waiting.

    1. I am praying for you and Sherry, Jack. Whatever is weighing on your minds right now, rest assured that the Lord knows about it and will see you through somehow. His will be done. Be patient.

Indeed, it would be difficult to raise a child these days. There are far too many pressures, (false ones at times), both on children and their parents. And social media and TV makes the pressures and problems worse by focussing on the negatives in life, rather than turn them to positives.

There's a lot of good in this world; but good news does not sell papers or provide an audience for TV advertising.

God bless you always. Trust Him.

  4. God is the missing piece in so many lives today, a piece so very desperately needed. May we reflect what it means to live for Christ in our own lives that young people will clearly see why we have hope.
    Blessings, Victor!

    1. Sadly, many young people, and older ones too, do not know God.

      God bless, Martha.

  5. It is sad that there is so little hope in the world. In some ways it is not just the young who suffer from this. I agree with Anonymous and his quote from Romans. Trust in God and the hope of salvation is surely what we all need. Thank you, Cathy

  7. Your other readers have expressed feelings much better than I might, so I won't try to reinvent the wheel. Only to admit, I'm at a loss to understand. I love what you said about it's our duty to instill in them a sense of hope; to teach by example. Praying!

    1. Mevely, I admit I don't understand either. The world seems to have changed drastically in the past two years or so. It seems that hope is gone. There is no glimmer of light in peoples' eyes, in their lives and in their souls. Young and old. Specifically the young.

People seem to be living life for today, because there is no tomorrow. Perhaps they don't believe in eternity.

      Praying with you. God bless.

  10. It is very concerning that the mental health of the young is causing many suicides.

The Samaritans Organisation, UK, can and do help many who feel suicidal. Their number is 116 123 and can be called free day or night, 365 days a year.
