If you think education is expensive, try the price of ignorance.
It seems to me that, despite all the technological, scientific, medical and all other advancements society has made over the past few years, we seem to have more ignorance than at any other previous times in the world's history.
It would be fair to say that in the past, say the Middle Ages, or whatever age you wish to choose, people were "ignorant" in many ways. I use the word "ignorant" politely and in its true sense. People were ignorant in that they did not know then what we know now. They did not know about electricity, medicine, science and all the things we know now. You can't blame them for that. They were still learning.
But now things are different. We know so many things that our predecessors could not even dream of. Computers, robotics, AI, medicine, surgery, and so much more. Yet, despite all this knowledge, a lot so freely available on the Internet, in books and elsewhere, ignorance seems on the rise more than ever before. People seem to glorify ignorance. They seem averse to learning. Education is laughed at as unnecessary. So often you see celebrities on TV, entertainers or sports personalities, attending quiz show and boasting at how little they know on any subject and how badly they did when at school. They parade their lack of knowledge as something to be proud of. The subliminal message being "I'm not educated by I did well!"
Whilst that may be true for them it is not so for everyone. For every successful singer, actor or sportsman there are millions who have failed. But the message permeates vulnerable young minds who believe that they too do not need education. And the danger is that you have a future generation unable to think for itself and easy prey to be manipulated by false news, views and opinions.
Reminds me a bit of the Old Testament. Read there how many times God spoke to the people of Israel through many prophets and they did not take notice, they did not listen, they did not obey, and they paid the price.
Anyway: Change of subject. May I recommend a wonderful book that teaches the Bible, (both Old and New Testaments), in easy to read simple language.
It's called BIBLE SUMMARY For Adults and Students by Michael Kotch. LINK HERE
...a good education can be expensive, but the alternative can be even more expensive.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. God bless, Tom.
DeleteDo you read minds? I was just thinking how stupidity is heralded on television and in movies; presumably for laughs. And what demographic is laughing? That's what's scary ... they vote!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this reading recom. I'm going to check it out and see if it's not available at the library or on Kindle.
Hi Mevely. I get irritated when people are proud of their stupidity. Only minutes ago, the question on TV is "in which American State is the Indy 500?"
DeleteThey did not know. I shouted at the TV - the clue is in the name idiots!!!
I was told I get over-excited and to calm down. How can I calm down if people are idiots?
As for the book; it really makes the Bible easy to read. It's in modern English and in story-telling mode. It is available in KINDLE. Michael Kotch is an American psychologist from Pennsylvania. He has programs on our TV. Here's his website:

Very true.

Hello Irish Cherokee. It's so nice to see you visiting here. Thank you. Please call again soon and often. God bless.
DeleteDave Thomas, who founded the Wendy's hamburger chain, didn't complete high school as he had to drop out and go to work. He became very successful because he never stopped learning.
ReplyDeleteWhen he found out young people were pointing to him and saying, "See, he didn't finish high school and he did great!" and seeing his story as an excuse to drop out of school, he went back and worked to get his diploma. He knew his path would have been easier had he gotten the education.
You've made so many valid points, I only hope the young people realize how important it is to get an education before it's too late.
Thank you, Mimi. I did not know about Dave Thomas; although I remember we had a chain of Wendy's over here. You are right, education does make life easier for people and for others around them too.
DeleteGod bless you.
I'm going to have to get that book you've recommended here, Victor. And yes, it seems that in today's society, ignorance is bliss. It is not! We should all commit ourselves to life-long learning. Thanks, as always, for your timely reflections.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
I first "met" Michael Kotch on our Christian TV channel. He does a program once a week where he reads from his book to school children. The stories are told in simple terms for simple minds like mine. None of those long he begat him who begat him and him and so on; as you get in the Old Testament. So I bought his book. It is wonderfully written in chronological order both Old and New Testaments.

God bless, Martha. Best wishes.
I’m learning despite myself. God is making it abundantly clear. Regine
ReplyDeleteYes Regine, we are all learning in our own way and at our own pace. God makes sure of that. Feel free to write me off-line if you wish to discuss this further. Contact us link above.
DeleteGod bless.
Hello Victor: I agree with you, it's a shame that the educational system is failing in many ways.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry I have not commented on many of your amazing blog posts.
You have a great gift that God has given you.
Thank-you for a lovely post.
Gods Blessings for a very healthy and happy New Year.

Ignorance may have been acceptable in the past due to the lack of resources, but not today. We live in a time when online platforms make learning so accessible. I used to think taking classes was overwhelming until I found ways to balance work and study, even considering the option to
ReplyDeletehire someone to take my class when things got too hectic. Learning online has been a blessing, proving that there's always time to grow. Don't let this ease of access to knowledge go to waste stay curious and keep learning.
